This Programme is designed for students who wish to extend their understanding of music technology as a creative tool. You will become familiar with a range of techniques and approaches to computer music and sonic arts, and with the history of sonic art and related traditions.

You do not need to have a music qualification or to read music to apply for this programme; however, a large number of options in performance, orchestration, composition and music history are available for students with appropriate musicianship skills.

CareersA high proportion of our Music graduates have either progressed to postgraduate study at a university or conservatoire or have entered the music profession as performers, composers, teachers and technicians. Others have entered arts administration, publishing, the media and management. Brunel music courses also help develop a wide range of vocational, collaborative and transferable skills that are highly attractive to employers in industry and commerce.

Contents

The degree course is modular. Most modules are worth 20 credits and you must complete 120 credits for each year of your degree programme. You´ll have a wide range of modules from which to choose and you can specialise in areas that particularly interest you. The final year project requires you to carry out research on any related topic of your choice.

Practical music activities

Brunel´s School of Arts has a strong tradition of practical music-making and there are a number of ensembles that you can participate in, including the Brunel Sinfonietta, New Music Ensemble, Big Band, Performing Arts Choir, r:emote (electronic performance group), as well as a variety of smaller ensembles.

The Arts Centre at Brunel also offers a range of other groups including an orchestra. It also holds regular lunchtime and evening concerts featuring both visiting performers, music students and staff. Student compositions often feature in these public performances.

Teaching and Learning

Music staff have particular teaching and research strengths in composition (both acoustic and studio-based), interactive music, algorithmic composition, performance, musicology, and socio-critical musicology.

Modules on this course reflect the expertise of the staff and focus on the creative use of technology as a music making tool, as well as considering the cultural and historical issues surrounding the use of technology in music.

AssessmentEach subject employs a wide range of assessment methods. These include coursework, individual and group projects, oral presentations, practical work and some written examinations.

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.

UCAS Tariff - 300 points, from:

* GCE A and AS-level Tariff points typically from 3 A-levels together with either 1 AS-level or Extended Project Qualification (typical offer BCC, plus a C in either an AS or EPQ). General Studies/Critical Thinking accepted.
* Irish Tariff points from 5 subjects.
* Scottish Tariff points from 3 Advanced Highers plus 1 Higher.
* Advanced Diploma Tariff points in Creative and Media, including an A-level for Additional and Specialist Learning.
* BTEC ND DDM in a related subject.
* IB Diploma 31 points.

Experience with music or sound processing software applications is desirable.

For all of the above, 5 GCSEs or equivalent at Grade C or above are also required, to include English and Maths.

Access: Pass in a related subject.
