Sustainable electrical technologies are those that can be used for an indefinite period without damaging the environment, or without depleting natural resources. Sustainable electrical and control technicians are involved in the design, installation and maintenance of electrical and control systems in the construction and manufacturing sectors. The aim of the course is to produce technicians that will operate in a sustainable manner in their careers to ensure that maximum energy efficiency is achieved through the use of renewable technologies and energy management techniques. In doing so, graduates will play an important role in addressing the issues of climate change.

Graduates completing a course in Sustainable Electrical Technology will be qualified as technicians and will be equipped to work in the renewable energy manufacturing sectors. Typical employers may include:

Take testThe minimum entry standard for Leaving Certificate graduates progressing to an ab-initio Ordinary Degree (Level 7) course is an ordinary D3 in five subjects including Mathematics and either English or Irish. Mathematics at foundation level is not acceptable to meet the minimum entry requirements as mathematics is considered an essential element of the course.
Advanced entry into year 2 will be offered to holders of a FETAC Level 6 National Craft Certificate in Electrical or Electrical/Instrumentation trades. Candidates availing of advanced entry will be required to complete bridging modules in Mathematics 2 (SECT H1017) and Engineering Science (SECT H1018). Advanced entry into year 2 will also be considered from applicants who have suitable qualifications in science, technology or engineering.
Special Requirement
Prospective students interested in undertaking this course are required to pass a colour blindness test before accepting an offer of a place. It is the student's own responsibility and at his own his/her own expense to provide a documentary evidence of the optician report to the Institute.
