As a leisure expert you investigate issues concerning leisure and its impact on people and society. You're combining diverse academic areas such as sociology, economics, marketing, and geography.
Leisure activities are more than just a pastime. They can also indirectly provide health improvements, social cohesion in neighbourhoods and sustainable development in cities or regions. What effect does leisure have on your well-being, and how can it contribute towards social participation in a problem neighbourhood? What is needed for a talented sportswoman or musician to develop into a real sports star or successful musician? The leisure expert explores these concepts through a multidisciplinary, academic, and research-based approach. Your future position is likely to be within sport associations, consultancy and engineering agencies, event organisations or within state, provincial and local authorities. Examples of professions are: academic and applied researcher, consultant, lecturer, leisure policy developer or project manager. You'll investigate and expand the scientific foundations underlying the exciting world of leisure.
The academic bachelor in International Leisure Sciences is `competency-oriented´. During your studies you develop a number of academic and management competencies. To do this, you will often work independently and sometimes in small groups on cases and assignments.
This programme is completely English taught. Academic literature is often only available in English and each university graduate has to be capable of writing an article in English. As study (and future work) will take place within an international setting, you have to be prepared to communicate in English.
The 3-year Academic Bachelor Programme
The programme takes 3 years, divided into 6 semesters; the first year has 4 terms.
The Academy for Leisure also offers two professional bachelor programmes in the field of leisure: International Leisure Management, which is also taught in English, and Vrijetijdsmanagement, which is taught in Dutch.
Course planning
Year 1
In the first year, the multidisciplinary foundation for the programme is established and you get introduced to leisure sciences and research methods. The semesters are organised thematically. In the first semester the accent is on how leisure time is spent, in the second semester it is on the organisation of leisure. During the first year, you work on a number of cases from various scientific perspectives.
Year 2
In the second year you deepen your knowledge on leisure activities and organisation of leisure (in depth).
Year 3
In the fifth semester, you choose a minor. In the sixth and last semester, you evaluate and critically apply what you have learned by:
The third year also includes a practical assignment and the completion of your Bachelor (graduation) thesis.
Types of teaching (in year 1):
Programme internationalization:
This programme has a workload of 180 ECTS.
In addition to lectures, seminars, debates and case studies in the first two academic years, you work on a number of projects in each semester. In these projects, you apply the methodological knowledge and skills gained to a subject related to that semester’s theme. Projects will become increasingly international as your studies progress.
In the fifth semester, you have the opportunity of following a few minors at NHTV’s partner universities, either in the Netherlands or abroad.
In the last semester, you write a Bachelor thesis to complete your studies. The thesis is an individual product, in which you will explore first-hand one of the dimensions of leisure. As a rule, topics for the Bachelor theses are derived from current research being conducted by members of staff.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
