The Bachelor of Science Tourism is an academic programme focussing on developments in tourism and the interrelationships between tourism, economics, society and the environment.
Global tourism has firmly established itself as an industry of major importance, and is more than just a powerful economic force. The activities of tourism affect nature, the environment and the landscapes of tourist destinations. Tourism changes the living environment of individuals and cultures worldwide. In addition, tourism is very sensitive to global transformations: acts of terrorism, economic recession, epidemics and climate change have a strong impact on the travel behaviour of tourists and on the prosperity of tourist destinations. The complexity of the tourism phenomenon requires a scientific approach. As a student of this programme you will learn how to research tourism. After graduating as a bachelor of science, you can either apply your knowledge to the sustainable development of tourism, or continue your education by following an academic Master.
The BSc Tourism is a three-year study programme delivered by staff from both NHTV and Wageningen University. Year 1 and 2 take place in Breda. In the first year it is important that you obtain a wide angle view of the domain, as tourism is such a diverse phenomenon. In the second year you will deepen and broaden your knowledge. This year includes an international field project in South-east Asia. The third year takes place in Wageningen and consists of your bachelor's thesis and a minor of your own choice.
During your studies you will move towards increased (educational) independence. This means educational guidance is at its height during the first year and gradually decreases over the next two years.
The Academy for Tourism also offers an English-taught professional bachelor's programme, International Tourism Management, and three Dutch-taught programmes, one of which leads to an Associate Degree certificate. In addition, the Academy for Tourism offers three masters in the field of tourism.
Course planning
Year 1: introduction to the phenomenon of tourism (NHTV Breda)

Year 2: deepening your knowledge (NHTV Breda)
You will be introduced to tourism development, policy, governance and law, organisational behaviour and business management, intercultural sensitivity and tourism systems analysis. You also expand your academic skills and study philosophy of science. This year includes a four-week international research project.
Year 3: broadening your view (Wageningen University)
You get an insight into the latest innovations in management, policy, technology and sustainability. You finish your major with a bachelor thesis. In the second part of the year you choose a minor – this may be towards your Master study or following your personal area of interest. You can - for instance - choose a minor in international development studies, management studies or environmental sciences. You can also choose to do your minor at another university in the Netherlands, or abroad.
