Location of HZ University of Applied Sciences

The chemical industry plays an important role in solving problems such as climate change, safe food and health care. At HZ you acquire a broad general knowledge of chemistry and biology. The first two years introduce you to the professional field. In the third year, you specialize in either Applied Chemistry or Life Sciences.

Applied ChemistryApplied Chemistry trains you to become a researcher in the field of applied laboratory research. You will study the composition, the concentration and the quality of raw materials and products such as drinks, shampoo, medicines but also food products. You will also conduct researches into organic materials found in natural products and deal with environmental problems.

Lifes SciencesIn Life Sciences you study subjects such as bacteriology and virology, epidemology and immunobiology, the development of modern vaccines and the application of DNA techniques in the identification of micro-organisms. You also learn to use fluorescence imaging techniques. Life Sciences are fields in experimental scientific research that focus on the molecular biological processes of `life´. This ranges from viruses, microorganisms and plants, to human beings. The study of biological molecular processes involves advanced laboratory experimental work, like genomics, proteomics and cell culturing. The objective of the research is to find new methodology and innovative tools, which will contribute to the enhancement of technological knowledge for the benefit of man and his environment. This includes improvement of medical diagnostic tools, pharmaceutical drugs and vaccines, but also the improvement of plant & cattle breeding.

Contents

After familiarising yourself with the professional possibilities and your study programme in the first two years, you will choose for one of the two Majors `Applied Chemistry´ or `Life Sciences´, which consists of one semester specialization in these fields of study. Then you will choose a Minor semester in consultation with your personal study coach and based on both your interests and the qualifications you developed so far. Minor courses will allow you to broaden your knowledge in the field of your studies by following courses outside but still in coherence with your Major. You may also choose for a Minor which will allow you to obtain a deeper understanding of topics of your Major in which you have particularly interest.

HZ Applied Sciences study programmes provide you with theoretical education but focusses on practical components. To help you understand how research centres and companies operate, your last study year will be in company. The first semester consists of gaining experience and putting in practice your knowledge and practical skills in a research or R&D department of a chemical, pharmaceutical or nutritional company. During the second semester you will have to carry out a research project and report on its results.
