The Dutch have over a thousand years of experience in water management. In order to meet the growing demand of high-quality water for nature, consumption, agriculture and industries, new solutions must be developed, taking into account and balancing all different interests involved. Cooperation at an international level is pivotal to safeguard the interests of millions of people, to prevent flooding and protect or improve ecologically valuable areas, such as wetlands. It is undeniably important to study water management in an international context. Water Management programme at HZ University of Applied Sciences offers this possibility.
The Water Management programme covers various aspects on water management. You will learn the basics of the aquatic environment, acquire the skills to examine the many characteristics of water and gradually familiarize yourself with the technology that is applied in research and in controlling water systems.Excursions to a variety of institutions and companies, fieldwork nearby and outside the Netherlands encourage the student to bring the acquired knowledge and skills into practice.
Being part of the programme, professionals share their actual experience highlighting current issues on water. By including topics on policy, legislation and management instruments you learn to approach water as an integral part of society.
After familiarising yourself with the professional possibilities and your study programme in the first two years, you will choose a Minor semester in consultation with your study coach and based on both your interests and qualifications you developed so far. Minor courses will allow you to broaden your knowledge in the field of your studies by following courses outside but still in coherence with your Major. You may also choose for a Minor which will allow you to obtain a deeper understanding of topics of your Major in which you have particularly interest. You may choose to study your Minor Programme abroad at one of our partnerschools.
Finally, the Water Management programme provides students with theoretical education but also focusses on practical components. Two semesters work placement represent therefore an important part of the curriculum.
The first work placement period will take place during the third year. The main goal of this work placement is to gain some working experience and put your knowledge into practice. In the second semester of the final year, there is a second work placement. This time, you will be working on a project for a company. During this period you will write a report in which you will show your ability to carry out a research and bring some solutions which could be implemented by the company
