A big part of addressing global issues like the environment, human rights and poverty reduction requires addressing people’s behaviour and the way we live. Communication is vital in changing social processes and behaviour. The specialization Communication and Media equips you with the skills to develop, implement and evaluate communication and media strategies to do just that – using communication to realize social change.
You also learn how to stimulate cooperation between different stakeholders, like governmental bodies, NGO’s and companies, in addressing social issues and local, national or international levels.
Communication & Media is very broad. We focus on issues such as social change, public opinion, cross media and developments in the media sector, freedom of speech and access to information.
When you enter the work field as a junior project manager you can work as campaign coordinator, communication manager or social change consultant in international organisations, governmental organisations and NGO’s.
Your future international career lies at the heart of our programme in international change and project management. You are equipped with the knowledge and skills to take with you as you start your international career.
You combine a Bachelor of Business Administration degree (BBA) with a specialization, which will be your future work field: Public Health or Communication & Media.
During the programme you learn to manage a project from A to Z. You learn to translate theory into practice during through interactive ways of teaching. This includes guest lecturers from non- governmental organizations like Butterfly Works or an inspirational talk about leadership from ex-CEO of WWF in South Africa, Tony Frost. In different courses you pay visits to organizations and events relevant to the subject of the course. For example; the first year students of 2011 produced the daily conference newspaper at the European Conference on Tobacco or Health (ECToH) in Amsterdam.
Year 1
Each semester ends with a project based on real-life situations. The project ‘Orientation on the Profession’ is part of year 1. In this project you get to know your future work field interviewing people with a career in Public Health or Communication & Media. The other project of the first year is the Visual Problem Appraisal (VPA) training in which you work to develop strategies to improve the livelihoods of communities in India.
Year 2
In year 2 we’ll take you one step further. You delve deeper into the subject matters of Public Health and Communication & Media, further improve you project management and research skills and work on your development towards a sustainable leader. As part of the project International Sustainable Business students spent three weeks working with agricultural communities in Kenya.
Year 3 and 4
In year 3 and 4 you choose electives and complete two internships. The electives help to broaden your horizon as well as prepare you for a masters if you wish to study further. The two internships of half a year each will provide you with invaluable work experience.
Throughout the four years at Windesheim Honours College you develop a personal portfolio that underlines your unique selling points in order to plan for your internships and future employment.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
