The European Studies degree programme is based in the Department of Politics and International Relations. The programme draws upon teaching and research excellence across a wide range of disciplines as recognised in the 2008 Research Assesment Exercise. European Studies students will acquire: knowledge of the development, workings and policies of European Union institutions; advanced linguistic competencies and fluency in at least one of French, German, Spainish and Italian; and an ability to apply the concepts, theories and methodologies of at least one social science to the international context. European Studies students and staff provide a dynamic, motivating and supportive environment in which to study. The European Studies degree programme is linked to Royal Holloway's Centre for European Politics, which organises regular events to discuss the key issues facing Europe and the world today.
For European Studies students, the third year of their degree programme is spent in a relevant European Country. The European Studies department has links with prestigious departments across Europe. Students may spend a year at a European university or business school; work as interns at EU institutions; apply for assistantships at educational establishments; or obtain professional work experience abroad.
