This programme provides a broad understanding of the mechanical engineering industry, whilst allowing students to develop their own specialist skills in the second year.
Aims of the programme
This programme is designed to meet the following aims:
* Produce higher technicians equipped to play leading roles in the engineering industries, using modern technologies.
* Provide students with the knowledge and reflective work-based skills to equip them for a career in industries related to engineering
* Develop student competence in applying IT to engineering problems.
* Develop the critical and analytical powers of the student.
* Provide the student with the skills to adapt and respond positively to change in the workplace.
* Assist the student to develop the skills required for both autonomous practice and team-working
The programme includes the following modules:
* Analytical Methods
* Product Design and CAD
* Mechanical Principles
* Thermofluids
* Materials
* Workshops
* Applied Science
* Business Management
Assessment
Assessment is by a mixture of coursework, project work and examinations.
Attendance
2 years part time, day release
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
Take testApplicants must have at least one of the following: 1 A Level / Advanced GCE or 2 AS Levels in Maths, Physics, IT or Design Technology (for AS entry, these must be at Grade B or above, with at least one in Maths or Physics)
PLUS 5 GCSEs at C or above including Maths and English; a BTEC National Diploma preferably in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
Language skills
If English is not your first language, you will need to provide proof of your fluency in English before you can begin a programme. The main systems for measuring this are IELTS with a minimum score of 6.0 for degree programmes or TOEFL with a minimum score of 550 for degree programmes. Recently the TOEFL computer-based test has been abolished to make way for the introduction of the Internet-based test, gradually eliminating the traditional paper-based method. Other qualifications may be satisfactory. We can tell you what is acceptable.

This qualification may be used as a pathway to registration with a number of professional bodies including the Institution of Incorporated Engineers in Mechanical Engineering, the Institution of Plan Engineers and the Institution of Engineering Designers.
