This programme provides you with a route into professional and management careers within the construction industry. Study is through a mixture of lectures, seminars, group projects and tutorials. Site visits and work experiences are an important part of the programme.

Aims of the programme
* be effective in their immediate employment by developing practical application of theoretical knowledge;
* develop the personal/social abilities necessary for tasks involving both teamwork and personal initiative;
* develop a positive attitude to a planned career development based on a sound knowledge of the alternative routes available and a balanced view of their own abilities and opportunities for progression;
* develop an understanding of legislation, as applied to the Construction industry;
* develop an appreciation of alternative forms of construction.

Career options
Students successfully completing the HNC can progress and top it up to a Foundation Degree. Students could choose to enter fields such as Architecture, Building Control, Building Surveying, Construction Management, Site Management and Quantity Surveying or continue to study part time towards membership of a professional body such as the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) or the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS).

Assessment
Assessment is by a mixture of course work, practical assignments and projects.

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

Requirements

HNC Applicants must have at least one of the following:- 1 A Level/Advanced GCE or 2 AS levels in appropriate subjects plus Maths GCSE at Grade B or above and 3 further GCSEs including English and a Science subject at Grade C or above; an appropriate Advanced GNVQ/AVCE or a National Diploma/Certificate or equivalent qualification.

Mature students with relevant experience are welcome to apply. Mature applicants without formal academic qualifications are welcome to apply.

Language skills
If English is not your first language, you will need to provide proof of your fluency in English before you can begin a programme. The main systems for measuring this are IELTS with a minimum score of 6.0 for degree programmes or TOEFL with a minimum score of 550 for degree programmes. Recently the TOEFL computer-based test has been abolished to make way for the introduction of the Internet-based test, gradually eliminating the traditional paper-based method. Other qualifications may be satisfactory. We can tell you what is acceptable.
