This programme is designed to provide students with a high level of understanding of the design, function, construction and statutory requirements for buildings of all classes, and to prepare them for more advanced employment in the construction industry. The programme consists of a combination of core and optional courses which provide appropriate training in each case for technicians employed in architecture, building surveying, building control, building management or quantity surveying. The courses have been designed to include a significant practical element.
Enrolment on the programme entitles students to become student members of the Chartered Institute of Building. The programme is also recognised nationally and internationally by employers in the construction industry.
Career options
Opportunities exist in architecture, construction and estate management, as well as surveying. The programme also provides direct entry to the second and final years of related degrees
Each HNC route comprises ten courses, including core, route-specific and elective courses. Alternatively, each HND route comprises sixteen courses. Exact variations differ depending on the route chosen, but core courses are given here.

BTEC National Certificate/Diploma in construction or civil engineering, AVCE (AGNVQ) in construction and the built environment, or one or more relevant HNC or A-level passes.
Language skills
If English is not your first language, you will need to provide proof of your fluency in English before you can begin a programme. The main systems for measuring this are IELTS with a minimum score of 6.0 for degree programmes or TOEFL with a minimum score of 550 for degree programmes. Recently the TOEFL computer-based test has been abolished to make way for the introduction of the Internet-based test, gradually eliminating the traditional paper-based method. Other qualifications may be satisfactory. We can tell you what is acceptable.
