These programmes help and encourage students to develop spoken and written skills in a language while learning about its structure. Students learn to speak and write the language in formal and informal contexts. Depending on the level of the course, they will also learn about elements of society, culture, politics and the economy of the country or countries where their chosen language is spoken. Students receive group tuition plus guided study in the university's language centre.
The nature of the Certificate/Advanced Certificate languages programme enables students to join at a level appropriate to their qualifications and experience and achieve the Certificate or Advance Certificate in a shorter space of time. Students with no prior knowledge of the language may join with course 1 and would normally qualify for the Certificate after three years' part-time study, or the Advanced Certificate after four years. Candidates with a GCSE or equivalent qualification in the language may join with course 2 and qualify after two years' part-time study for the Certificate and three years for the Advanced Certificate. Candidates with an A-level in the language and evidence of time spent in the country of the language studied may be eligible to join the Advanced Certificate programme with course 3 and qualify after two years' part-time study.
You may also study a language as part of a three-year BA Hons degree. The language will make up either 25 or 50 per cent of the programme, depending on your combination of subjects. See "BA Hons" below for content.

Language skills
If English is not your first language, you will need to provide proof of your fluency in English before you can begin a programme. The main systems for measuring this are IELTS with a minimum score of 6.0 for degree programmes or TOEFL with a minimum score of 550 for degree programmes. Recently the TOEFL computer-based test has been abolished to make way for the introduction of the Internet-based test, gradually eliminating the traditional paper-based method. Other qualifications may be satisfactory. We can tell you what is acceptable.
