Requirements

Admission to year 1

The following is a description of the current situation. Please check on hit.hanze.nl if the admission procedure has changed.

Dutch students

Dutch students with a VWO, HAVO or MBO-4 diploma can apply. The ASA programme suits HAVO students who have completed the study profiles of Natuur & Techniek (Nature & Technology) or Natuur & Gezondheid (Nature & Health) with Mathematics B.

You are also eligible for the programme, if you have:

  • a propaedeutic phase certificate;
  • any certificate approved by the Minister of Education which is equal to any other of the named certificates;
  • a certificate that, in the judgement of the Examination Committee, is equal to any of the other named certificates.

International students

You are eligible for the programme if you have a diploma comparable to the Dutch HAVO (higher general secondary education) level, or higher. Your qualifications at this level must include mathematics and physics and preferably chemistry and/or biology.
Students who possess an International Baccalaureate Diploma in the English language that includes examinations in Mathematics (HL) and Physics (HL) are eligible for admittance. It is strongly recommended, when possible, to complete Chemistry courses (HL) too.

As HIT is an international institute, a comprehensive understanding of English is a must. For the ASA programme, a minimum of an academic IELTS test with an overall band score of at least 6.0 (six) is required. Completion of an English language test is not necessary for students from the following countries (native speakers or when education has been exclusively conducted in English and completed in): Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, United Kingdom or USA, as well as students who possess an International Baccalaureate Diploma in the English language.

You are also eligible for the programme, if you have:

  • a propaedeutic phase certificate;
  • any certificate approved by the Minister of Education which is equal to any other of the named certificates;
  • a certificate that, in the judgement of the Examination Committee, is equal to any of the other named certificates.

Students who have a foreign diploma or certificate also need to meet the following requirements in order to be eligible for enrolment:

  • have the approval of the NUFFIC, the IBG, or Compaz with regards to the foreign diploma/certificate;
  • a valid visa or other documents allowing them to study in the Netherlands.

The admission process for 21+

This process aims to investigate whether the candidate student (who has reached the age of 21 but does not meet the above requirements) has a right to any exemptions according to the prerequisites to the ASA programme as set by the WHW (Higher Education and Research Act, Wet op het Hoger Onderwijs en Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek).

The investigation should determine whether the candidate is able to take the ASA programme. The investigation consists of at least:

  • A meeting with the commission members, wherein the applicant request (and all relevant data as provided by the prospective student) will be discussed so that the commission can get an idea of the candidate’s educational level and ability, and whether he/she will be able to take the ASA programme.

The admissions committee may, on the grounds of previous experience or the evidence provided, exempt the candidate from any of the tests described above. For foreign students opting for the programme, the language test is required. In order for the candidate to pass, the grades must be at least a ‘full’ 6 (six) for the English language proficiency.

Talented students may be eligible for admission directly into the three year main phase, thereby reducing study time by one year. To be eligible, you need to demonstrate an outstanding knowledge in the fields of mathematics, science and English and possess the required professional skills necessary for the main phase of the programme.

There are specific requirements that you must meet to be admitted directly to the ASA Bachelor main phase:

If you have taken an IELTS test, the required score is 6.5, with no subscores below 5.5. Excluded from the English test are students from the following countries (native speaker of education exclusively conducted in English and completed in): Australia, Canada, New Zealand, United Kingdom or USA;
  • Three personal essays. These papers must be in before June 1st. Based on the completion of these papers, the Admission Committee will indicate the likelihood of your success in the professional competencies component of the 3 year programme. For more information about these papers, see www.hit.hanze.nl;
  • If the Admission Committee approves your application, you will take part in a three week assessment programme that takes place at the beginning of the academic year. During these weeks you will complete a number of assessments and a science knowledge test, which will demonstrate whether you possess all the competencies needed to be admitted into the main phase. If you pass this assessment you will be admitted directly into the three year programme.

Grants and Scholarships

Hanze grants for EU/EEA students

Certain non-EU/EEA students will receive a scholarship worth of € 3,500 when following a Bachelor Degree Programme in the academic year 2012 - 2013. The scholarship will be awarded for the official length of the programme.

Registered non-EU/EEA students can apply for this scholarship worth of € 3,500. Based on the applicant's achievement potential, this scholarship might be granted.

Dutch national grant system ('Studiefinanciering')

There is a national grant system in the Netherlands, called 'studiefinanciering', for students who are enrolled with a Dutch higher education institution. To be eligible for such a grant you:

  • have to have the Dutch nationality and

  • have to be younger than 30

Foreign students are generally not eligible for such a grant. Only EU-students under certain conditions can make use of ‘studiefinanciering’.

Grants for EU/EEA students

Fee-paying EU/EEA students who will start their degree programme in the academic year 2012/2013 may apply for a so-called "collegegeldkrediet" (tuition fees credit).

This is an interest-bearing loan from the Dutch government to cover the costs of the Dutch higher education tuition fees. The loan will have to be repaid (in instalments) after the student has graduated.

Students can apply for a 'collegegeldkrediet'' with the IB-Groep, the Dutch organization that is responsible for student loans and grants. The IB-Groep provides information in English at www.ib-groep.nl. We advise you to check the site regularly for up-to-date information.

The authority responsible for this grant is the IB-Groep. We try to provide you with the correct information on the conditions for obtaining the grant. However, no rights can be derived from the information given here.

Huygens Scholarship Programme

The prestigious Huygens Scholarship Programme of the Dutch Ministery of Education, Culture and Science is open to excellent students from all countries. It is aimed at talented students who want to come to the Netherlands in the final phase of their bachelor’s studies or during their master’s studies.

The scholarship covers:

  • a generous reimbursement of tuition fees
  • a monthly allowance of € 1,380 (this includes a standard contribution towards healthcare insurance);
  • visa fees (standard contribution);
  • a one-off payment towards international travel costs (standard contribution based on nationality);

Applicants first need to be accepted by the study programme of their choice. They can apply for an Huygens scholarship through Nuffic (Netherlands Organization for International Cooperation in Higher Education), on the basis of a nomination by Hanze (UAS). As the Huygens Scholarship Programme is aimed at highly talented students, Hanze (UAS) will normally only nominate students that have obtained excellent results in all their previous studies.

Currently, no applications can be submitted because the issuance of new grants is put on hold due to the fact that measures of austerity have been implemented by the Dutch government following the negative global economic climate.

The Netherlands Fellowship Programmes

Hanze (UAS) also participates in the Netherlands Fellowship Programme (NFP), which supports students from developing countries. The fellowships are granted for the duration of the programme and cover the tuition fees and the costs of international travel, subsistence, books and health insurance.

China Programme

China Programme scholarships are meant for outstanding Chinese students who have completed a Bachelor’s programme and want to come to the Netherlands to do a Master’s programme. Students who wish to be considered for a China Programme scholarship must apply to the China Scholarship Council in Beijing. The programme is highly competitive; only 25 scholarships are awarded each academic year. A national selection committee decides which candidates will be awarded a scholarship.

StuNed scholarships

StuNed scholarships are available for Indonesian professionals with at least two years work experience in a development-related organisation who want to come to the Netherlands to do a Master’s programme or a short course.

Emergency fund

Hanze (UAS) has set up an emergency fund for students who are forced to stop their studies because they have run into financial difficulties through no fault of their own. They can appeal to the Emergency Fund for an interest-free loan or a gift. Students who want to apply for a contribution from this fund should contact the student counsellor.
