Biochemistry is the study of the molecules and chemical processes in living organisms. Cell Biology studies the structure and physiology of cells, their component parts, and their interactions with the environment. At Jacobs University, these two fields of study are integrated into one comprehensive program through which students acquire a broad understanding of the molecular and cellular mechanisms that form the basis of life.
The Major program at Jacobs University prepares students for graduate studies in these fields or in biophysics, analytical biochemistry, immunology, microbiology, neurobiology, genetics, molecular biology and molecular medicine. The course starts, in the first year, with a unique biochemistry and cell biology lecture series that gives a comprehensive overview of the two fields and their foundations in chemistry and biology. There are two corresponding laboratory courses. Students also become familiar, to the same depth, with two other natural science subjects of their choice. In the second year, cell biology and biochemistry are taught as separate in-depth lecture courses accompanied by integrated lab courses. The third year is for specialization within the branches of molecular life science such as biochemistry, biomedicine, cell biology, molecular biology, molecular genetics, and molecular microbiology. Laboratory work at that stage takes place in research groups.
Education at Jacobs University is structured according to the belief that problem-solving is most successful where several disciplines are considered to develop one approach.
Therefore, Jacobs University’s students do not only gain credits in courses of their field of study but also by taking so-called “transdisciplinary courses”. This means the main component contains mandatory and elective courses in the home school – the School of Engineering and Science (SES). The missing credits (up to 40) can be collected from a variety of courses:
* “Other School Courses”, i.e. not offered by the home school: courses of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences (SHSS)
* Language courses
* University Study Courses (USC): lectures on different topics that are related to either one of the schools or that form a connection between both.
In addition, students can select Master courses whose credits are fully accounted to their Bachelor.
Especially Jacobs University’s science programs are very research-oriented and undergraduate students have the chance to gain practical experience in the modern and well equipped laboratories on campus.
