Location of Jacobs University Bremen

Computer Science is a challenging and fascinating discipline with ample job opportunities. Almost all modern goods either directly incorporate computer systems or information technologies drive the manufacturing process. While computer technologies come and go at a fast pace, there are a number of fundamental principles underlying those technologies.

The Computer Science (CS) program at Jacobs University provides a first class education which focuses on the understanding of these principles and how they are applied in practice.

The courses offered in the first year provide a general overview over a broad range of CS topics,as well as an intensive training of programming skills. Only after the first year of study students have to finalize their choice of major, a liberty uncommon at most state universities in Germany. In years two and three, students will on the one hand increasingly specialize within CS, and on the other hand benefit from the transdisciplinary openness that is the hallmark of Jacobs University and take courses from neighboring disciplines, complementing their in-depth CS training. Students, thus, learn to adapt their knowledge and expertise to a variety of tasks. Thisis an invaluable asset in a student’s future career.

Research is an essential part of student education at Jacobs University. Enabled by a very low student to faculty ratio, students will participate in real research work even during bachelor education. Faculty is working in exciting areas of modern computer science, for example: robotics and embedded systems, motion planning, large-scale data bases, computational logic,semantic web, machine learning, computer networks, distributed systems, or visualization and computer graphics.

Contents

Education at Jacobs University is structured according to the belief that problem-solving is most successful where several disciplines are considered to develop one approach.

Therefore, Jacobs University’s students do not only gain credits in courses of their field of study but also by taking so-called “transdisciplinary courses”. This means the main component contains mandatory and elective courses in the home school – the School of Engineering and Science (SES). The missing credits (up to 40) can be collected from a variety of courses:

* “Other School Courses”, i.e. not offered by the home school: courses of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences (SHSS)
* Language courses
* University Study Courses (USC): lectures on different topics that are related to either one of the schools or that form a connection between both.

In addition, students can select Master courses whose credits are fully accounted to their Bachelor.

Especially Jacobs University’s science programs are very research-oriented and undergraduate students have the chance to gain practical experience in the modern and well equipped laboratories on campus.
