Some of the most significant achievements of present-day society would not have been possible without the work of highly motivated and innovative engineers and scientists. Electrical engineers and computer scientists in particular are involved in the design of all the components and systems that underlie our increasingly information-intensive activities.
One of the particular strengths of Jacobs University undergraduate education is its pronounced interdisciplinary approach. It is our objective to put this into practice for the engineering major and to connect electrical engineering and computer science seamlessly in one undergraduate major. Therefore, the major in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) is a combination of the more conventional Electrical Engineering (EE) and Computer Science (CS) Majors.
The rationale behind this combination is the fact that
* through digital electronics EE has become to a large degree, a software/ mathematically driven engineering discipline and that
* CS is intimately tied up with EE as the major enabling technology for CS
The program endeavors to give students a thorough training in both disciplines without sacrificing the academic quality and without putting an unduly high workload on the students.
Education at Jacobs University is structured according to the belief that problem-solving is most successful where several disciplines are considered to develop one approach.
Therefore, Jacobs University’s students do not only gain credits in courses of their field of study but also by taking so-called “transdisciplinary courses”. This means the main component contains mandatory and elective courses in the home school – the School of Engineering and Science (SES). The missing credits (up to 40) can be collected from a variety of courses:
* “Other School Courses”, i.e. not offered by the home school: courses of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences (SHSS)
* Language courses
* University Study Courses (USC): lectures on different topics that are related to either one of the schools or that form a connection between both.
In addition, students can select Master courses whose credits are fully accounted to their Bachelor.
Especially Jacobs University’s science programs are very research-oriented and undergraduate students have the chance to gain practical experience in the modern and well equipped laboratories on campus.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
