Mathematics is the most fundamental of the sciences. It encompasses a broad range of topics, ranging from the beauty and satisfaction of pure thought (in areas such as algebra, complex analysis, geometry or topology) to the usefulness of practical applications which is no less satisfying (for example, when improving signal and image processing using wavelets, or modeling fluid using partial differential equations). Often enough, the purest of mathematics finds intriguing practical applications in surprising ways (number theory is used heavily in cryptography, wavelets and dynamical systems are at work in engineering, mathematical game theory has won a Nobel prize in economics, etc).
Our curriculum is very flexible by design; it accommodates students of high potential with varying backgrounds and different interests. At the same time, the education is thorough and systematic, and accompanied by courses conveying advanced perspectives and aspects of current research. From early on, students are encouraged to accept challenges through bonus problems in courses, or at on-campus and international math competitions. Math students participate in our research groups together with graduate students and faculty, and several have even produced research articles.
Having hosted the 2009 International Mathematical Olympiad, Jacobs University is known for its commitment to the field, and proudly attracts ambitious students from all over the world to its campus.
Education at Jacobs University is structured according to the belief that problem-solving is most successful where several disciplines are considered to develop one approach.
Therefore, Jacobs University’s students do not only gain credits in courses of their field of study but also by taking so-called “transdisciplinary courses”. This means the main component contains mandatory and elective courses in the home school – the School of Engineering and Science (SES). The missing credits (up to 40) can be collected from a variety of courses:
* “Other School Courses”, i.e. not offered by the home school: courses of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences (SHSS)
* Language courses
* University Study Courses (USC): lectures on different topics that are related to either one of the schools or that form a connection between both.
In addition, students can select Master courses whose credits are fully accounted to their Bachelor.
Especially Jacobs University’s science programs are very research-oriented and undergraduate students have the chance to gain practical experience in the modern and well equipped laboratories on campus.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
