An ever-increasing world population demanding food, water, energy, health care, and education puts unprecedented pressure on the ”Earth System”. This concerns especially resources and the natural environment, and the institutions that provide access to and sitribution of resouces and education. Successful sustainable management of these global challenges, therefore, requires an integrated approach which combines elements from the natural and engineering sciences with those from social, political and economics studies. The study program Integrated Environmental Studies provides a broad and interdisciplinary education in these diverse fields within the multicultural environment of Jacobs University Bremen with its students from about 100 different countries. In addition to lectures and seminars, students will gain practical experience and skills during laboratory courses, excursions (on coal, power plants, renewable energy, environmental impact of mining, energy policy, development projects) and internships. The course language is English. The program offers to focus on three specialization areas, namely ”Environment and Resources”, "Energy Policy and Technology" and ”Sustainable Development”.
Education at Jacobs University is structured according to the belief that problem-solving is most successful where several disciplines are considered to develop one approach.
Therefore, Jacobs University’s students do not only gain credits in courses of their field of study but also by taking so-called “transdisciplinary courses”. This means the main component contains mandatory and elective courses in the home school – the School of Engineering and Science (SES). The missing credits (up to 40) can be collected from a variety of courses:
* “Other School Courses”, i.e. not offered by the home school: courses of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences (SHSS)
* Language courses
* University Study Courses (USC): lectures on different topics that are related to either one of the schools or that form a connection between both.
In addition, students can select Master courses whose credits are fully accounted to their Bachelor.
Especially Jacobs University’s science programs are very research-oriented and undergraduate students have the chance to gain practical experience in the modern and well equipped laboratories on campus.
