The study of Integrated Social and Cognitive Psychology (ISCP) deals with general principles of human behavior and thought, their empirical investigation and the implication of research findings for theoretical questions as well as for various applied settings. Students in the ISCP program study psychological theories about general principles of human cognition, feeling, interaction, and communication.

The program of ISCP at Jacobs University focuses both on cognitive processes and behaviors and on their interaction with the social and cultural context. This involves a thorough foundation in social and cognitive psychology. All complex psychological processes are a function of basic processes, including perception or memory. Our program is characterized by streams of courses dealing with basic as well as more complex cognitive functions in social cognition such as attitudes and stereotypes. The program aims at the integration and synthesis of the analysis of mental processes at both levels.

Understanding current psychological research and theory implies the capacity to critically evaluate up-to-date literature in this area. Students achieve this through a stream of lab courses in which important methods of psychology are taught. This training involves hands-on experience with different experimental paradigms as well as actual experience as both a participant and as an experimenter.

Contents

Education at Jacobs University is structured according to the belief that problem-solving is most successful where several disciplines are considered to develop one approach.

Therefore, Jacobs University’s students do not only gain credits in courses of their field of study but also by taking so-called “transdisciplinary courses”. This means the main component contains mandatory and elective courses in the home school – the School of Humanities and Social Sciences (SHSS). The missing credits (up to 40) can be collected from a variety of courses:

* “Other School Courses”, i.e. not offered by the home school: courses of the School of Engineering and Science (SES)
* Language courses
* University Study Courses (USC): lectures on different topics that are related to either one of the schools or that form a connection between both.

In addition, students can select Master courses whose credits are fully accounted to their Bachelor.
