In this programme the study of European politics forms a large part of the syllabus. You also study at least one modern European language to Honours degree level and spend the third year abroad.
Teaching and assessment
Students can expect to have between 12 and 15 hours of teaching time per week in their first year of study. We also encourage students to make use of language learning facilities, such as the digital laboratories and libraries, in their own time.
Career opportunities
Employment fields keen to employ good languages graduates include law, university teaching, management consultancy, marketing, banking, insurance and the Civil Service, both in the UK and on the Continent.
First year
All students follow compulsory language modules in every year of study, as well as modules that focus on the culture and society of one or two European countries in depth. In the first year there are core modules that introduce the study of European politics. These are:
* Foundations of Politics
* Introduction to the EU
Second year
In this year students follow two core modules, one in language and one in politics (Institutions, Politics and Policies of the European Union), and are then free to select the politics options that appeal to them. The selection includes:
* Comparative European Government
* Modern Political Ideologies
* International Relations Theory
Year abroad
A vital part of the programme is the time you spend abroad. This will normally be at one of our partner institutions, following approved university courses. While you are abroad, you follow courses and, where required, take examinations.
The year abroad, together with your second year, counts 25% towards the final degree classification.
Fourth year
In the final year you may write an independent research project on a European topic of your choice. As before, all students follow a compulsory language module and then are free to choose other options from a wide range.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
