At Dundee our degrees emphasise real-life engineering practice and research methodology through extensive practical projects chosen to match your career objectives.
Our emphasis is on electronic engineering, with electrical engineering options available if desired, so that we offer a range of degrees which cover virtually every aspect of electronic and electrical engineering that you will encounter in a professional career. Our flexible degree structure makes it possible for you to swap up to the end of Level 2 as new interests develop and it becomes clearer to you what sort of professional career you intend to follow.
Our staff have contributed much to the advancement of engineering on the international stage, with a strong electronics research presence in key technology fields such as renewable energy, biomedical engineering, nano-electronics and laser/wireless communications. Undergraduates have the chance to be involved in this research from their first year.
The MEng (Hons) Electronic Engineering and Physics is similar to the BEng (Hons) Electronic Engineering and Physics, but at a more advanced level.
Level 1
All degree combinations share a common set of modules to establish a good understanding of the foundation subjects upon which the later years of the degrees depend:
- Electricity, Optics & Waves
- Electronic/Electrical Engineering project
- Engineering Mathematics
- Mechanics & Thermodynamics
- Professional Studies
Level 2
The modules in level two are also common across degrees, and are more focused with an emphasis on general electronic engineering principles and underlying mathematics:
- Analogue & Digital Electronic Systems
- Electrical & Mechanical Systems
- Engineering Design & Communications
- Engineering Mathematics
- Engineering Software
- Fundamentals of Electronic Devices
Level 3
The range of subjects studied in the modules taken at Level 3 is broadened to include analogue systems, digital systems, control theory and telecommunications. Practical classes give exposure to modern test-and-measurement equipment and specialist CAD software is used for electronic design:
- Analogue Electronic Systems
- Communication Skills
- Computer Engineering/Power Engineering*
- Control Engineering
- Digital Electronic Systems
- Mathematical Methods
- Microelectronics
- Solid State Physics
- Telecommunications
*Options for students wishing to specialise in Power Engineering
Level 4
All students undertake an individual project, plus six modules from a choice of a list of around twelve choices. These modules cover many of the modern topics required by a practising electronics engineer. Your project will be based with a research group or industrial partner.
The current module list includes:
- Advanced Materials
- CMOS Microelectronics
- Communications
- Computer Engineering/Power Engineering*
- Control Engineering
- Image Systems
- Nanotechnology
- Operations Management
- Robotics
*Options for students wishing to specialise in Power Engineering
Previous projects have included:
- an interactive image system for the diagnosis of sight defects in children
- robot automation of NCR ATM reliability tests
- graphical user interface for camera control.
Level 5
Level 5 is the final year of the MEng programme, amongst the modules that you will choose to study there will be a significant emphasis on professional engineering topics such as management and industrial economics. Professional engineering principles are further developed through a group project which is undertaken with a local electronics company.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
