Programme Goal
The full-time Bachelor programme in Civil Engineering offers students the ability to acquire fundamental subject knowledge and skills to be able to plan, design, assess, construct, maintain and manage functional building structures under social, ecological and economical considerations and within a team environment. Students acquire these skills within six semesters full time.
Programme Profile
The Bachelor degree offers a professional level qualification in three years. The programme is predominantly project oriented and students have the opportunity to apply curriculum contents and methods taught in this programme directly to concrete examples by way of an internship at a construction company, an engineering office or an administrative body. The modular structure of the programme is designed to aid in students’ mobility.
Fields of Employment
Career opportunities for civil engineers are diverse. They may include professional roles with private sector employers or public offices, self-employment in planning or project management as well as independent consultancy or executive entrepreneurial roles.
Presently, there are more than 100,000 civil engineers employed in construction, building or civil engineering. These roles comprise employment in engineering and planning offices, technical administration offices, service providers for building, transport and water management, as well as organisations engaged in technical development aid. Based on an anticipated shift in demographics, it is expected that the demand for well-educated personnel in this field will continue to grown in the middle and long term.
Programme Structure
The first and second semester comprise natural scientific and subject-specific foundations: engineering mathematics, structural mechanics, building construction, surveying, building materials / physics, building management, transportation and water management.
The third to sixth semesters convey knowledge and skills in statical calculations, building management, structural engineering, transportation, water management and geotechnology, as well as public building law and general studies Toward the end of the programme, students select four immersion electives to advance their professional qualifications. The modular structure of the programme enables students to easily repeat, have a higher mobility and study abroad for a semester.
The programme is taught in German and comprises 180 ECTS. Students may commence in the winter or summer semester.
The qualification Bachelor of Engineering qualifies students to enter a Masters programme in the field. The University of Applied Science Frankfurt am Main (Fachhochschule Frankfurt am Main) offers consecutive Masters programmes in Infrastructural Management (M.Eng.) and Sustainable Structures (M.Eng.).
