Construction managers are based both on site and in the office and are expected to work with a wide range of people from architects to construction workers.
The Construction Management programme covers a wide variety of technical, financial and planning aspects in theory and in practice, using both traditional and online teaching methods.
A feature of the course is hearing from industry experts in guest lectures. You will also spend six months on a work placement in Year 3.
There are opportunities to study in other European countries under the Erasmus Programme and as far afield as Australia and the USA as part of the Overseas Exchange Programme.
The programme is fully accredited by the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) and the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS).
Many Construction Management graduates have gone on to work for a number of highly renowned companies including MACE and Ogilvie Construction who have been impressed by the practical expertise and mature outlook of our students.
There are many career paths to follow: construction manager, site manager, planner, project estimator, facilities manager and building control surveyor, to name but a few.
The International buisnessman and GCU graduate, Khalid Abdul Rahim, has provided scholarships to enable selected built and natural environment students to undertake study tours, internships and cultural elements related to the Middle East.
Year 1: The first year is a foundation level, developing knowledge of fundamental principles and practice of the construction industry.
Year 2: You will focus on discipline-specific skills. Core Construction Management skills will be taught to generate further understanding of how buildings are constructed and perform in use.
Year 3: Trimester A will consist of your industrial placement, where you will learn how to apply your knowledge in a work scenario. Trimester B will further your understanding of core skills in Construction Management and construction.
Year 4: You will undertake an Honours dissertation on a related subject topic of your choice and further your study from a choice of subjects including Commercial Management, Project Management, Facilities Management and Sustainable Construction.
Work placement: Work placements, completed in Year 3, can be completed both in Scotland and abroad.
Exchange: Study exchange opportunities exist with partner institutions overseas.
Assessment: Various assessment methods are used, including written coursework, unseen examinations and time-constrained tests.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
