The midwifery programme at GCU gives students the skills and expertise they need to succeed. To do this effectively, we provide individual support, allowing students to study at a level appropriate to their needs. Clinical placement account for 50% of your time as a student, in both hospital and community settings - and while on placement, you will work with the same hours and shifts as staff. This means you need a strong commitment to flexible working.
The programme is about both academic and clinical skills - and the approach to studying that you learn on the course will be invaluable to your future lifelong learning. On clinical practice you will be mentored by a clinical midwife, who will both develop your skills and assess your competence.
Towards the end of this course, there is the option to spend three weeks in an elective placement, giving you the opportunity to work somewhere further afield.
From working within the NHS to independent practice here or abroad, a midwife's career path can take a number of routes. Throughout your career, you will be expected to continue your professional studies - in fact, many midwives now go on to study at a higher degree level, such as our Masters programme.
