If someone's suffered an injury, has an illness or disability, the physiotherapist helps restore movement and function to as near normal as possible - and they're therefore key members of the health care team.
The GCU programme develops graduates who are both innovative and skilled. As phsyiotherapists with a genuinely scientific outlook, they can deal with patients in a variety of settings - from Neurorehabilitation to Musculoskeletal, respiratory care to industry.
The focus of teaching is on solving problems, and working both independently and in groups. As well as lectures, for the majority of the time you will be divided into smaller groups for seminars, tutorials and practical sessions.
To develop the skills required in physiotherapy you'll practise on - and model for - other students in your class. Your learning is also supported by visiting the clinical simulation lab, by field trips, practice education placements and e-learning. In addition to university-based learning, students gain experience in an elective placement, which can take place in the UK or abroad.
As a chartered physiotherapists, you'll be eligible to work in NHS hospital phsiotherapy departments, health centres or private practice. GCU graduates have also gone on to pursue research activities or work in the local community or sports medicine.
Year 1: You will study subjects such as Applied Anatomy of Physiotherapists, Movement and Exercise, Fundamentals of Human Physiology, People, Society and Practice and Foundations for Practice in Care.
Year 2: Within Years 2-4 you will participate in Practice Education placements. You will also cover specialist subjects such as Neuromusculoskeletal Management, Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Care, Neuro-rehabilitation, Health Perspectives and Research Methods.
Year 3: Practice Education, Lifespan, Activity, Fitness and Health, Vocational Rehabilitation, Investigating Effective Practice and an Optional Module, e.g. Sports Injury Rehabilitation, Mental Health and Wellbeing, Gender and Health.
Year 4: Practice Education, Organisations, Policy and Professional Practice and an Honours project.
Work placement: Practice education placements take place in a variety of healthcare settings ranging from NHS hospitals to health centres and the community. In Year 3, students organise their own elective placement. This can take place abroad.
Assessment: A variety of assessment methods are used including structured reflective essays, annotated bibliographies, video-analysis, formal examinations, viva voce and practical examinations, seminar and poster presentations.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
Take testHigher: BBBBC (one sitting)/BBBBBB (two sittings), A Level: BBB, ILC: BBBBB (B2). 300 UCAS tariff points from one sitting or 400 points over two. Before applying, it is advisable to visit local hospitals to observe the work of the Physiotherapist or undertake work experience or voluntary work in a related area and where the impact of disability will be experienced.
Essential subjects: English (Higher/ILC-H/GCSE). Three science subjects, at least two of which must be at Higher/ILC-H or one at A Level.
Recommended subjects: Science subjects at all levels, particularly Biology/Human Biology and Physics.
