Glasgow Caledonian University is the only institution in Scotland to offer this type of programme and we arguably have the strongest emphasis of any university in this country on food and its development.
Students learn about food composition, the effect of chemicals and additives on consumers, and food safety - ensuring that the incidence of food poisoning and food borne diseases are reduced or controlled.
The programme is extremely diverse covering genetics, marketing, microbiology, and nutrition, combined with key industry skills and an understanding of food legislation.
It also has a large practical component to complement lectures and tutorials and a range of quality placements are available to give students experience in an area where they hope to eventually seek employment.
In particular, a three-month work placement is available in Year 4. This includes food processing, nutrition, clinical and non-clinical laboratory work and food research and development. It is a mark of the quality of our training that students are often offered jobs by their placement company even before graduating.
