The Bachelor’s Degree of Business Studies (BWL) has been offered by the Faculty of Business and Economics as a six-semester ‘Bachelor of Science’ degree (B. Sc.) since the winter semester of 2008/2009.
The first half of this degree program will encompass the basic principles of business administration and economics, while the second half will see to the consolidation of specialist knowledge within one of the offered majors, depending on the choice of the individual student. The course program will also be supplemented with courses in methodical faculties such as mathematics, statistics and project management.
Within each major a clear research and practical relevance will be established by means of inquiry into a current business and/or economic questions.
The majors available within the bachelor’s program are organised in such a way that a direct continuation of study with one of the Master’s programs offered by the faculty is made possible.
The Faculty of Business and Economics offers the 'Komplementärfach' Economics (~one third of the total study amount) for the first time in the fall semester of 2011/2012. It can be studied in combination with a 'Profilfach' (major field) within the so-called two-subjects Bachelor's degree. Graduates have the opportunity to gain basic knowledge on business and economic studies.
The Bachelor of Business Studies and Economic is composed of seven areas:
* Basis of Business Studies: accounting, marketing, business tax, production & logistics and theory of business.
* Basis of Economics: microeconomics, macroeconomics as well as institutional and evolutionary economics.
* Methodologies: mathematics, statistics and project management.
* Majors: selection of one out of 6
* International Entrepreneurship, Management and Marketing
* Finances, Accounting and Taxes
* Logistics
* Behaviour-related Economics
* Cultural Management
* Sport Management
* Compulsory-elective subjects: Econometrics or Operations Research
* General Studies (c.f.: general studies section)
* Bachelor Thesis combined with a seminar
The range of subjects taken within the first to third semester are identical for the studies of Economics and Business Studies. Therefore, a change within these subject areas until the third semester is possible.
Within the 'Komplementärfach' of Economics the following subjects are compulsory: Introduction of Business Studies, Economics and Economic Data Analysis, Marketing, Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Accounting, Finance studies, Industrical organisation and Production/Logistics.
Modules for advanced specialisation Available majors:
‘International Entrepreneurship, Management and Marketing (IEM²)’, ‘Finance, Accounting and Tax (FIRSt)’, ‘Logisitics’, ‘Behaviour-related Economics’, 'Cultural Management' or 'Sports Management'.
This program is to be completed in six semesters with a Bachelor’s Thesis.
No specialisation is taken for the 'Komplementärfach'.
Compulsory, compulsory-elective and elective courses
All of the modules that are comprised of foundation courses within this degree program are compulsory. As the students progress past this point within their studies, compulsory-elective and elective subjects will be included in the program.
Teaching profile
Within the first three semesters of the Bachelor’s Degree of Business Studies the students’ attendance at the university is required more so than in the later semesters. In addition to lectures many courses will also offer tutorials. Through this combination of course types the entry into university for first year students will be eased and the transition from the school system into university studies will be facilitated by the faculty, particularly by the professors and research assistants thereof. In the second half of the program, seminars and the project module will be in the foreground, within which, scientific and independent working are the focal points. The final examination is then comprised of the bachelor’s thesis which will also be accompanied by a seminar.
General Studies
General studies courses provide the career-related proportion of the degree program, supplementing the technical component administered by the major. They comprise 25% of the degree, imparting study techniques and key qualifications necessary for a career outside the field of education. The purpose of the general studies courses is to help students to develop the general competencies that are essential for professional orientation and qualification. These courses can be specialised courses (e.g. sustainable management and law) or methodological courses (e.g. analysis of economic data).
Graduates of the 'Komplementärfach' chose their General Studies in agreement with their major subject.
Examinations and Examination Forms
All examinations in the Business Studies bachelor’s program take place alongside the respective courses. One of the examination forms is the classic written examination that varies in length depending on the course. This form of examination is mainly offered during the earlier semesters due to the generally large size of the cohorts. In some courses, so called electronic examinations will be carried out in the Testcentre at the University of Bremen. Oral examinations, presentations, assignments and projects will be offered primarily in the later semesters. In many courses so called ‘Portfolios’ are admitted. These forms allow for ‘smaller’ examinations during the lecture period to be considered in the final grade.
When various examination forms are permissible within a course the students will be informed at the beginning of the semester of which examination type will be carried out. The written and oral examinations take place following the lecture period. Any repeat examinations will generally be held at the beginning of the following semester.
Other Information
A mentoring program will be implemented, beginning winter semester 2010/2011. This will contribute to the improvement of support for students through the different departments.
General Studies
General Studies account for 25% of the study programme. They train key competences for subsequent career fields. By building their own individual specialities, students are able to shape and amplify their academic profile.
Work practicals
We recommend that students complete an internship within the duration of their studies. An internship can be elected in place of a course from the general studies area of the Business Studies bachelor’s program. In order to be awarded credit points for the internship it must be at least five weeks long. Students can gain support in searching for an internship position from the Career Centre at the university or from the faculty’s Office for Practical Experience and International Affairs. (Further information under:
When preparing an internship report 6 ECTS will be acknowledged within General Studies.
Semester abroad
Although a semester abroad is not compulsory, it is recommended. Due to the advised course and study structure of the program, a semester abroad would be best planned for the fourthor fifth semester of studies. As a result of the choice in major, there is a high flexibility in regard to the courses that will be accredited and therefore a semester abroad can be considered when planning the study program without thought to delaying the duration of studies. Support in organising a semester abroad is offered by the faculty’s Office for Practical Experience and International Affairs. Further information can be found on the homepage of the faculty under the category of ‘International. (
As part of the application process for a place at a foreign university the required foreign language abilities will be verified. When participating in the Sokrates/Erasmus Program students are asked to demonstrate a level of B2 in the respective language of instruction at the host university.
Extensive advisory services in this area are offered by the faculty’s Study Centre and the Office for Practical Experience and International Affairs.
