Location of University of Bremen

Hanse Law School is an international Law study programme, organised by three co-operating universities, (Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg, Bremen University and Rijksuniversiteit Groningen (Netherlands). The Hanse Law School offers two similar Bachelor study programmes: Comparative and European Law (Oldenburg and Bremen) and Law in Europe (Groningen). The master study programme Comparative and European Law which is jointly organised by those three universities and which offers students to be awarded both a German and Dutch University degree, started in the winter term 2005/2006. This is the first time that three universities from two different EU Member States co-operate in offering a Law programme with a combined double degree.

Contents

Traditionally, law studies are confined to analysis of the law as applied in a single state by the courts of that country. This rather narrow-minded perspective does not take sufficiently into account the needs arising from a globalised knowledge and information society. Especially within the context of transnational economic relations, today's focus is shifting from the pursuit of costly litigation towards the avoidance of legal disputes by means of the intelligent contractual regulation of economic relations. This calls for competencies which enable the practice of law from the perspectives of different national bodies of law, as well as a sound knowledge of the law of the European Union and its bearing on national law. Students must also be familiar with the content of international treaties and the practice of courts of arbitration, which within the context of international economic relations increasingly present an alternative to positive national law. The study of the history and the structure of law constitutes an indispensable precondition for this. Together with the University of Oldenburg and in collaboration with Groningen University (Netherlands), the Law faculty offers an alternative to conventional German law studies for the state examination: An intensive course of foundation studies in German and European law, each from an international comparative perspective and with regard to the law of the European Union - and hence more in tune with the requirements and needs of the economy, the EU and other international institutions. The concept of the Hanse Law School is focused on comparative studies of the foundations of German, Dutch and English law as well as the law of the European Union. Courses are delivered in German, English and Dutch.
