Digital Media is an interdisciplinary course of studies concerned with both the theory as well as the application of planning, conception, design, technical implementation and evaluation of interactive multimedial application systems. Studies integrate aspects of media theory, media engineering, media science and media design.

Besides the general foundation courses, students can choose between two main thematic areas: The program Media Design offered by the University of the Arts Bremen focuses on artistic and design aspects of the field. Graduates are awarded the title Bachelor of Arts (B.A.). Studies in Multimedia Engineering (Medieninformatik) have their focus on the technical engineering aspects.

Subsequent non-teaching occupational fields

Studies in Digital Media prepare students for professional life in the field of the analysis, development and application of digital media in numerous branches of the economy and society. Students participate in an academic training which combines elements of classical computer science with design-oriented competencies employed in the manufacture and application of digital media. Job opportunities abound in the IT branch, telecommunication, advertising and public relations, culture and research.

Possibilities for additional qualifications

The graduation/final degree enables/ qualifies you to take on scientific master studies in the courses of study: Digitale Medien.

Contents

Studies embrace the theoretical and practical foundations of digital media and the development of multimedial interactive systems, including the methods of computer science and interaction design. In addition, students learn how to apply these systems for the resolution of concrete problems and to examine the societal correlations of their development and application processes.

The six-semester Digital Media Bachelor program has a largely flexible structure. Initial compulsory basic courses are followed by advanced and specialized courses, the Bachelor Project (final project), and the Bachelor Report at the program's conclusion. The curriculum is based on a modularized structure according to the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). The Bachelor program requires a total of 180 Credit Points (CP); one credit is equal to approximately 30 hours of work.

The two foundational semesters are typically occupied by introductory modules into computer science, design and digital media. The goal is to attain a general understanding of approaches, technologies, notions and methods, which lay the foundations for the successful completion of subsequent advanced courses. The acquisition of programming skills, exercises in desgin, and the conceptual framework needed for reflections on the subject of media are all part of the package.

The advanced and specialized semesters are filled with compulsory option courses, a semester abroad, the Bachelor's Project, and the Bachelor Report. An individual choice of focus is possible.

General Studies

General Studies account for 25% of the study programme. These courses train key competences for subsequent career fields. By building their own individual specialities, students are able to shape and amplify their academic profile.

Semester abroad

It is compulsory to spend one semester studying abroad. Students are free to decide when this should take place, but it is usually undertaken sometime between the 3rd. and the 5th. semester.
