Francoromance Studies comprise academic studies of the languages, literatures and cultures of French-speaking countries. Besides France, these include several other countries spread over four continents, where French is the official language, language of communication, or spoken by an important minority.
Subsequent non-teaching occupational fields
Career opportunities exist in professional academic areas such as publishing, librarianship, the media, in cultural fields, international organisations, the diplomatic service and private foundations.
Possibilities for additional qualifications
The graduation/final degree enables/ qualifies you to take on biennial scientific master studies
The programme imparts foundation knowledge in the disciplines of linguistics, literary science and area studies.
The main focus of the programme thus lies on the French language, including its different national and regional variants, past and present French-language literatures, as well as the history and cultures of France and the Francophone countries.
Furthermore, French writing and spoken language skills are systematically trained in special language courses. These comprise approx. one quarter of the studies.
Area foci/ modules for advanced specialisation
Students majoring in the subject can in their third year elect profile modules in a specialisation taken from a thematic area of Francoromance Studies. They may also choose to write their dissertation in this thematic area, i.e. in linguistics, literary science, or area studies (the latter only when the interdisciplinary profile module is studied as a specialisation in area studies). Equivalent study credits obtained at universities abroad will be recognised. Students studying to be teachers can also choose a didactical topic on selected aspects of teaching French as a foreign language.
Students studying the subject as a minor can in their second year choose between a linguistics or a literature specialisation module.
General Studies
General Studies account for 25% of the study programme. These courses train key competences for subsequent career fields. By building their own individual specialities, students are able to shape and amplify their academic profile.
School-related studies for trainee teachers - general, incl. studies in education In this programme area, subject-related studies in the field of teacher training are supplemented with courses dealing with teaching practice. This programme area comprises 25% to 50% of studies in the field of teacher training, depending on the type of school envisaged. It encompasses the following topics: studies in education, subject didactics, internships and key qualifications.
Work practicals
Students majoring in the subject must undertake a compulsory internship or work experience, preferably abroad. It is possible to also underatke a second work experience, which will also count as a study credit.
Students studying to be teachers of the French language undertake various practice teaching assignments in place of the internship or work experience.
Semester abroad
It is compulsory for student majors to complete a six-month course of studies abroad (preferably in their second year of studies). Student minors must complete (a total of) a six-month stay abroad.
