History is concerned with historical change in society, the economy, politics and culture. As historical change took place in the past and hence cannot be experienced directly, studies in history approach their topics via the methodical and theoretically reflected analysis of available sources. The objective of historical research is to arrive at "true" statements concerning past events and to inquire into the determinants which govern such statements.
Subsequent non-teaching occupational fields
The degree course qualifies students for occupations in libraries and archives, in museums, journalism and publishing, as well as in school teaching and research. Students also receive the necessary grounding for a wide range of occupations in politics, public administration, culture and the economy.
Possibilities for additional qualifications
The graduation/final degree enables/ qualifies you to take on scientific master studies in the courses of study: Geschichte, Modern Global History.
The Bachelor programmes provide an introduction to the methods and working techniques of historical research. During the foundation phase of their studies, students acquire knowledge of the great epochs of history as well as of German, European and non-European history. In the second phase of studies - profilephase - course contents are oriented to specialisations in four different area programmes: cultures - conflict and transfer, order and dissense, historical interpretation and concepts of past and modern history - the multiplicity of meodernity. A special focus is laid on pursuing historical issues beyond the confines of classical epochal boundaries.
Students pursuing a career in teaching at state schools are taught competencies and skills in teaching history as a school subject, including didactics, and a subsidiary subject, as well as special courses for teachers (studies in education, didactics, placements and key qualifications).
General Studies
General Studies account for 25% of the study programme. These courses train key competences for subsequent career fields. By building their own individual specialities, students are able to shape and amplify their academic profile.
School-related studies for trainee teachers - general, incl. studies in education In this programme area, subject-related studies in the field of teacher training are supplemented with courses dealing with teaching practice.
