Language Sciences is the name of the discipline concerned with the scientific analysis of language in all its forms and applications. The objective is to grasp and explain the general principles according to which the world's languages are based, learned and applied in communication. This entails inquiry into which model best describes linguistic factors and which cognitive and social conclusions can be drawn from the analysis of language(s). Within the framework of Applied Linguistics there is an equally important focus on how to successfully deal with the knowledge thus obtained in non-academic occupational fields. In general, students are concerned with the analysis and evaluation of linguistic data, the compilation and organisation of data, computer processing, the variety and unity of language(s) and the application of language in (professional or everyday) communication. N.B.: Studies in Language Sciences do not involve learning a foreign language and literature themes are also not dealt with. Studies also do not include German language studies or German linguistics, as this belongs to the field of German Studies.
First-year students learn the necessary foundation knowledge on language and the use of language which is given insufficient attention in school curricular. Students attend compulsory introductory courses on phenomenology, terminologie, methodology and the objective target of Language Sciences. They gain an overview of the world's language variety, bordering disciplines and possible future occupational fields for graduates. During the second year this knowledge is enhanced. Students learn how to skillfully make use of and employ their analytical skills and inquire into the academic and non-academic fields of application for linguistic knowledge. At this stage students can decide whether to pursue the different facets of the subject, or to choose a specialism. There is no third-year teaching programme for students studying Language Science as a subsidiary subject.
Area foci/ modules for advanced specialisationStudents of Language Science as a subsidiary subject do not need to choose a specialism. However, this may be advisable in connection with their individual major. The following specialsit area programmes exist for the 2nd (and possibly 3rd) year of studies:
* Typology and language documentation (= TD)
* Computer linguistics and information management (= CL)
* language management and international communication (= SIK)
