Those interested in philosophising are prompted mainly by the desire to subject what is apparently matter-of-fact to a critical elucidation. Possibly, it is for this reason that philosophers are often regarded as that group of academics who dedicate themselves to seizing upon typical children's questions and subjecting these to analysis and differentiation by means of academic standards: What precisely does justice mean? Why should we think and behave in a moral manner? What distinguishes faith from knowledge? How are linguistic meanings derived? What are the characteristics of academic theory? Philosophical inquiry is often of such a fundamental nature that there is no room for it in other disciplines. Philosophical issues are those which cannot be solved either by formal methods alone (“calculate“), nor solely by means of empirical examination ("experiments"). The central method of philosophy is therefore the critical, exact examination of argumentions. The persuasive power of philosophical writings and positions concerning a problem must be evident in their supporting rational argumentation. Hence, studies are not concerned with private opinions, unexplored convictions of faith, or reference to authority; rather, the focus always returns to the conclusiveness of arguments, the adequacy of their presumptions and the consistence of their derived theories.
It makes sense to distinguish between three main areas of philosophy:
* The core area of theoretical philosophy comprises logic, the philosophy of language, the theory of cognition and the theory of science. This area also includes natural philosophy, which inquires into our interpretation of nature and into the philosophical implications of the results produced by the natural sciences. The philosophy of the mind investigates the relation between the brain and consciousness, body and soul.
* The field of practical philosophy encompasses above all the general theory of action, moral philosophy and ethics, social philosophy, political philosophy and the philosophy of law. In Bremen, the field of practical philosophy also encompasses anthropology and the philosophy of history. Whereas it is moral philosophy (ethics) which inquires into the criteria surrounding the moral judgement of human action, social philosophy, political philosophy and the philosophy of law are concerned with the foundations of the rules of human coexistence, the principles of justice and the legitimacy of political authority and legally sanctioned institutions.
* The history of philosophy has philosophy itself as its subject: here the objective is to analyse the great breadth of philosophical argumentation over the centuries.
Area foci/ modules for advanced specialisation
It is also possible for students studying on the programme as a subsidiary subject to choose a specialisation: The area programme "Philosophy; Morals and Law" offers seminars in the field of ethics, the philosophy of law and social philosophy, as well as applied ethics. By attending these courses students can build a specialisation in practical philosophy and advanced competences in respect of moral, legal and political argumentation. The area programme "Philosophy of Science" is concerned with the philosophical reflection of issues, methods and results of science. By attending these courses students can develop a specialisation in the field of theoretical philosophy and advanced competences in respect of scientific argumentation and its philosophical implications.
General Studies
General Studies account for 25% of the study programme. These courses train key competences for subsequent career fields. By building their own individual specialities, students are able to shape and amplify their academic profile.
Work practicals
A six-week internship is obligatory. Supporting courses and workshops are available, attendence of the evaluation-class (1 session) is obligatory.
