Physics is the science of inanmiate nature. It is concerned with the properties and behaviour of matter and fields in space and time, as well as the dynamics of space and time itself. Physics is regarded as the fundamental science upon which all others are based, such as for example the science of astronomy, chemistry, up to and including biology.
Subsequent non-teaching occupational fields
Physical principles and models find application in the engineering sciences, as well as in disciplines beyond the natural sciences, such as the quantitative sciences, for instance. The career fields in which physicists find employment are unusually manifold. They include fundamental research at universities and research institutes, various branches of industry, above all in the applied research and development of products and processes, production and distribution, public administration, the patent sector, environmental agencies, and even hospitals.
Students receive a sound grounding, which covers the full scope of experimental and theoretical physics. They also gain insights into the research specialisations at the University of Bremen: biophysics, solid-state physics, environmental physics and the theory of dynamic systems contribute towards Bremen University's outstanding reputation for fundamental research, as well as applied and interdisciplinary research.
Area foci/ modules for advanced specialisation
The elective subjects offered to students in their third year are: biophysics, solid-state physics, theoretical physics and environmental physics. An additional specialisation in molecular physics is currently in the planning stage. Courses in the didactics of physics are offered to students intending to become teachers (Lehramt).
General Studies
General Studies account for 25% of the study programme. These courses train key competences for subsequent career fields. By building their own individual specialities, students are able to shape and amplify their academic profile.
School-related studies for trainee teachers - general, incl. studies in education
For the two-subject Bachelor programme students choose a major and a subsidiary subject. For students pursuing teacher certification, only available as main subject.
Bremen University offers students intending to work in non-school career fields the possibility to choose virtually any combination of study programme.
Work practicals
Students undertake career orientation practicals within the context of General Studies (4-week work practical in a non-university institute, or an enterprise which employs physicists; students must attend accompanying courses). Students intending to become teachers must complete a 7-week practice period during which they teach a physics subject.
Semester abroad
Students may undertake a stay abroad, although this is not compulsory.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
Take testGeneral qualification for university entrance or specific higher education entrance qualification (e.g. Abitur, Einstufungsprüfung).
