The main focus of Political Science is, on the one hand, on political institutions such as the government, parliament, the judicial system, political parties, international organisations, and the administration (polity); on the other hand it is concerned with conflicts of interest and the power mechanisms which determine political processes (politics), and finally with the political contents and programmes in individual fields of politics (policy). The aim of the programe is to provide students with comprehensive academic and career-oriented knowledge of political fields (e.g. social policy, environmental policy, European policy), political institutions and political processes on the national, European and international levels.

Subsequent non-teaching occupational fields

Graduates can choose between different career fields in the three key sectors of modern society: the state, the economy and civil society. These fields encompass, for example, career opportunities in national and international organisations, the media, the administration, the economy, in trade associations and societies, in academic research and teaching institutions, as well as in the entire spectrum of politically oriented social agencies and establishments.

Contents

Besides studies in political science, the degree course encompasses studies in law, economics and sociology. The topics covered in the field of political science include an introduction to the social sciences and the governmental system of the Federal Republic of Germany, political theory, international relations, comparative political science and European integration, as well as policy analysis. Students studying for a joint Bachelor degree with the aim of becoming teachers must also have a specialisation in specialist didactics.

Area foci/ modules for advanced specialisation

Students studying the programme as a sole or main subject can attend advanced courses in the compulsory elective Area1 modules Pol-M 10 - 14. Individual specialisations in General Studies are possible.

General Studies

General Studies account for 25% of the study programme. These courses train key competences for subsequent career fields. By building their own individual specialities, students are able to shape and amplify their academic profile.

School-related studies for trainee teachers - general, incl. studies in education

In this programme area, subject-related studies in the field of teacher training are supplemented with courses dealing with teaching practice. This programme area comprises 25% to 50% of studies in the field of teacher training, depending on the type of school envisaged. It encompasses the following topics: studies in education, subject didactics, internships and key qualifications.

Work practicals

Sole subject Bachelor
Students must undertake a compulsory two two-month internship during their studies. Ideally, the internship should be embedded in the pursued career field. Additional voluntary internships may be recognised for General Studies.

These practicals are integrated in the components of the programme designated as professionalisation area (intensive preparation and follow-up, as well as teaching assignments provided by the University).

Students studying for a non-teaching Joint BA/main subject: a two-month non-teaching internship.
