General Objectives
* To provide students with the opportunity to study Speech Therapy in Cyprus, in a highly qualified academic and Clinical environment.
* To offer students a traditional intensive curriculum in Speech-(Language) Therapy (SLT) which will include medical, language and behavioural sciences, audiology, communication disorders and clinical practice
* To help students develop analytical thinking, clinical decision-making, and communication skills dependent on competencies in critical thinking, including the application of theory to practice.
* To instil confidence, responsibility, integrity, and alertness, qualities promoting professionalism, personal accomplishment, and valuable contributions to the profession and to society.
* To develop appreciation and respect to social and moral values, social responsibility, and empathy.
* To develop a strong multidisciplinary knowledge base through the general education and SLT courses in the program. Further, students are required to become self-directed learners essential for monitoring new research critically and applying relevant findings clinically.
* To provide the required education and clinical expertise as dictated by the professional codes of ethics and regulations leading to a professional licence, in order to foster successful professional and/or academic careers
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this program, the students will:
1.demonstrate knowledge of the principles of biological sciences, physical sciences, mathematics, and the social/behavioral sciences.
2.demonstrate knowledge of basic human communication processes, including their biological, neurological, acoustic, psychological, developmental, and linguistic and cultural bases.
3.demonstrate knowledge of the nature of speech, language, hearing, and communication disorders and differences, including the etiologies, characteristics, anatomical/physiological, acoustic, psychological, developmental, and linguistic and cultural correlates. Specific knowledge must be demonstrated in the following areas: articulation.
* fluency
* voice and resonance, including respiration and phonation.
* receptive and expressive language (phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics) in speaking, listening, reading, writing, and manual modalities
* hearing, including the impact on speech and language
* social aspects of communication (including challenging behavior, ineffective social skills, lack of communication opportunities)
* communication modalities (including oral, manual, augmentative, and alternative communication techniques and assistive technologies)
4.demonstrate knowledge of the principles and methods of prevention, assessment, and intervention for people with communication disorders, including consideration of anatomical/physiological, psychological, developmental, and linguistic and cultural correlates of the disorders.
5.demonstrate knowledge of standards of ethical conduct.
6.demonstrate knowledge of processes used in research, including the use of information technology.
7.possess skills in oral and written or other forms of communication sufficient for entry into graduate study and the workplace.
Employment Opportunities
Graduates of the program can work as speech therapists, with people who have disorders of communication, written language, and swallowing in various workplaces.Speech Therapists have the opportunity to work in schools (nurseries, primary and secondary schools), hospitals, clinics, in collaboration with other health professionals, nursing homes, clinics, diagnostic centers, rehabilitation centers, kindergartens, and have the ability to be self-employed. They can also work in research or Academic institutions.
