Today’s 24-hour economy, increasing international competition and the financial crisis: those are three currently relevant reasons for companies and institutions to want to be and remain ‘in control’. As a business controller, project controller or risk manager, you are aware of the financial condition of your organisation and you have the ability to guide it towards sound financial health.

What do IFMC graduates do?

As a controller or risk manager, you keep an accurate record of an organisation’s financial data, which enables you to adjust policy or have policy adjusted if necessary. You advise the company’s management and board of directors and you know exactly what adjustments need to be made in order to keep the organisation in a sound financial state. In brief, you monitor, analyse, guide and anticipate.

An important responsibility

A Bachelor of Economics is a real door opener. As the International Financial Management & Control study programme is taught in English, it will prepare you to work at international corporations both in the Netherlands and abroad. International companies, in particular, have the challenge of maintaining effective oversight of their activities throughout their entire organisations in the different countries in which they operate and taking the right action in time. Consequently, there is a strong demand for good controllers and risk managers who have an important role to play at international enterprises.

Continuing your studies

After completing this study programme, you have the possibility of pursuing a Master’s study programme, such as an MBA, either at our University of Applied Sciences or at a Dutch or foreign research university. One of the minors we offer includes a preparatory university minor.

Future career

The International Financial Management and Control programme will stand you in good stead for an international career as a business controller, project controller, project manager or risk manager. Graduates will typically start at an international company working as a financial business analyst, assistant controller or junior financial advisor.

Contents

International Financial Management & Control is a four-year study programme offered by The Hague University of Applied Sciences that leads to a Bachelor of Economics. It teaches students to manage the finances of an organisation.

Structure

Each academic year consists of four study periods (or blokken), of ten weeks each. These periods comprise teaching and project weeks with many opportunities for practical training and/or experience. In each of these periods, you will work closely with an international company and focus on a specific business economics problem faced by that company. You will end each period with a project involving an issue you must resolve. Any knowledge and skills you may need to accomplish this task will be taught in classes held in that period.

Foundation year

In the first year, the study periods are designed to give you an understanding of every field of business economics. For example, you will learn how to draw up an investment and financing plan, set up a business accounting system, draw up an annual report, identify an enterprise’s various business processes as well as effectively organise these processes. You will also learn how to record activities in processes so that the management can use this information to steer the company as necessary. Furthermore, you’ll learn a number of essential business skills such as presenting, analysing and reporting.

Main phase

The main phase lasts from the second through to the fourth year. The subjects introduced in the first year will be examined in greater depth in the second year. In addition, you will acquire knowledge about strategic management, financing and investment decision-making and international law. You will find yourself looking far more often beyond the borders of the Netherlands as you expand your horizons.

The third year includes a work placement at a company where you may work as an assistant controller, for example. In the fourth year you will choose a specialisation (minor). You have the option of taking your minor abroad through an exchange programme at one of our partner universities. There is a variety of specialisations you can choose from: i.e. Marketing and Finance, Financial Markets, Controlling, Sustainable business. and You conclude your study programme with a final-year work placement and which consists of a consulting project at at an international company.

Graduation

We view graduation as the crowning touch of your study programme. It is the moment you show us that you are ready to head off on your own and confidently enter the business world. In your final project, you will investigate a specific business issue and present your recommendations. Below are a few examples of final assignments:

  1. Design a management information system for an enterprise that is based on KPIs (Key Performance Indicators).

  2. Draw up a risk report for the enterprise and develop risk-management measures.
  3. Determine whether the current internal control system of the enterprise complies with international regulations.

The assessment of your final project will include an examination of the project structure, the substantiation of your recommendations, use of sources, internal communication, writing style, presentation, the degree to which questions have been answered, the practicability of the final project for the client and the degree of independent work.

Major-minor

In the fourth year you can opt to take various minors offered by national and international research universities and universities of applied sciences. We have no information yet on the available minors.

There is a variety of minors you can choose from: i.e. Marketing and Finance, Financial Markets, Controlling, Sustainable business.

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.
