Location of University of Kent, Medway Campus

This degree programme offers an exciting combination of subjects including practical sound recording, audio processing, music production, sound theory and contextual studies. It will help you to develop the intellectual and technical skills required to produce sound design and audio content for a broad range of creative media industries.

The unique blend of subjects includes the use of audio in film, radio, television, video games, art and exhibition installations. It also provides you with opportunities to develop an in-depth understanding of computer-based audio applications, sound synthesis, audio programming and digital signal processing techniques.

The degree is based in the Department of Music and Audio which is fully equipped with purpose-built studios and computer workstation facilities. Visiting industry experts contribute to modules, providing valuable professional insights and perspectives.

Students take two option modules in each year.

* Music and Society
* Popular Music Conventions and Production.

Core modules within the programme provide opportunities for you to develop important skills and techniques, while also exploring specific theoretical and cultural aspects of music technology. Option modules allow you to specialise and explore your own areas of interest.

Teaching and assessment

Most modules consist of a mix of lectures, small group seminars, practical workshops, individual or group project work, research and private study. You have access to current industry-standard recording and postproduction facilities to carry out your practical coursework assignments.

We use a wide range of assessment methods, including individual projects, recording sessions, audio assignments, sound design and multimedia tasks, seminar presentations and written papers. Alongside practical projects, you have lectures and seminars that help you to develop your writing and research skills.

IELTS

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

A/AS level: 300 points (over 3.5 A levels or equivalent) inc BC at A level or equivalent BTEC National Diploma: Distinction, Distinction, Merit, IB Diploma: 33 points inc 4 in Mathematics or IB Diploma with 15 points at Higher inc 4 in Mathematics.

English language entry requirements

In order to enter directly onto a degree course. you also need to prove your proficiency in English, and we ask for one of the following:

* average 6.5 in IELTS test, minimum 6.0 in reading and writing
* a TOEFL score of at least 580 including 4.0 reading and writing (paper-based test) or 85 including 19 reading and writing (internet-based test)
* grade C in Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English
* grade B in Cambridge Advanced Certificate in English
* international GCSE English as a first language grade C; as a second language grade B.

We also accept some school English certificates.
