Today, students of fine art are just as likely to stage exhibitions, produce critical and creative writing, and perform, as create ‘traditional' art for the ‘white cube' gallery environment. This results in a changing dynamic for making and studying art.
The School of Arts at Medway embraces this by offering a unique and exciting interdisciplinary learning experience where you are free to work in a diverse range of media and to develop your creative ideas. As an undergraduate student at Kent, you are free to produce work in: art practice, curation and critical writing.
You will have opportunities to collaborate on projects with other students in the Faculty of Arts and to produce public events, publications and exhibitions. The course integrates critical debate and the theory of art with the development of your practice-based work. Supported by your tutors, you are encouraged to realise your creative and intellectual potential by developing independent work through practice, and to take advantage of the rich culture of events, symposia and exhibitions that are a regular feature of University life. Students at Medway are engaged, enthusiastic and contribute to the energy that creates such a dynamic and challenging cultural environment.
Careers
The programme develops your skills and gives you the confidence to place your work within the arts field. It prepares you to work in a range of areas in the arts, both within large institutions and with independent practitioners. You can also work as a freelance artist, establish independent collectives and groups or decide to continue your academic studies by taking a postgraduate degree.
Through your study, you gain key transferable skills considered essential by graduate employers. These include excellent communication skills, the ability to work as part of a team and independently, and the ability to analyse complex ideas and the confidence to suggest your own innovative solutions.
Stage 1
Stage 1 introduces you to the core topics in the field. Movements and ideas from Realism to Relational Aesthetics, from the Bauhaus to Lady Gaga, and from the art academy to art in the streets are discussed. Studio projects are selfdirected, but expected to respond to the wider discussions and debates in the programme.
Core modules
* Contextual Studies (Theme: Space and Time)
* Creative Investigations (Theme: Communication and Critique)
Stage 2
In Stage 2, you develop your practice, looking specifically at the contexts of your work and the work of others, and taking account of historical and contemporary practice. In particular, you begin to develop your critical essay alongside your ongoing studio practice. The critical essay is a space where you can develop the ideas that motivate your practice and explore critical and creative approaches to producing writing. You also collaborate with other students in the module, Practice and its Publics where you can create an event, exhibition or publication project.
Core modules Studio Development
* Art in Context
* Contextualising Practice
* Practice and its Publics
Stage 3
In Stage 3, you produce an independent body of work and complete your critical essay. You choose your final route of study from three distinct strands: Art Practice, where your practice culminates in a presentation of work for the end-of-year degree show; Curation, where you produce a proposal for a curatorial project (which you are encouraged to realise upon completion); and Writing Critique, where you produce an extended piece of writing presented in the form of a publication.
Core modules
* Developing Ideas Through Practice
* Resolution
Year abroad
You have the opportunity to study abroad at one of our partner institutions either for a term in the autumn term of Stage 2, or for a year between your second and final year.
Teaching and assessment
Staff at the School of Arts have a close working relationship with students. All our staff are engaged with the practice of fine art and bring with them a broad range of experiences that cross the disciplines of criticism, curation and art production. Lectures and seminars are complemented by other teaching scenarios such as group critiques, one-toone tutorials, practice-based seminars and visits to galleries and museums.
You are given your own studio space so you have the freedom to develop as an artist, curator or writer, and you have access to fully-equipped workshops, IT facilities and darkrooms.
