Programme Profile

In this practically oriented programme, students acquire the ability to provide effective and competent solutions, using cutting edge technologies, to municipal challenges and issues. The programme in geomatica and municipal technologies (GeKo) is a cross-section oriented and located at the nexus between classical geomatics and applied municipal technology.
Programme contents focus on:
- Geomatics
- Surveying Technologies
- Facility Management
- Land Management
- Technical Infrastructure
Students learn how to capture and analyse spatial geodata. They further acquire the ability to solve organisational and technical problems within a municipal environment. In addition to subject specific knowledge required for such tasks, students gain skills and knowledge in methodological, economic and legal fields.

Opportunities

Graduates from the Bachelor programme in Geomatics and Public Works are highly qualified for a diverse range of roles, whether that be in surveying, within a planning association, in energy, waste or supply organisations, in transportation or telecommunications firms, property or facilities management.
Demand for specialised professionals with a degree level education in geomatics and municipal technologies continues to be high throughout the entire field of municipal technologies and city planning. This includes roles that engage with the administration, management and maintenance of municipal structures and property and infrastructural facilities.
Furthermore, GIS is slowly but surely becoming one of the most dynamic areas of growth worldwide, with increasing activities in rendering digital and interactive maps appropriate for the Internet.

Consecutive Masters programmes

The University of Applied Science Frankfurt am Main (Fachhochschule Frankfurt am Main) offers Masters programmes in Infrastructural Management (M.Eng.), Sustainable Structures (M.Eng.) or Urban Agglomeration (M.Sc.) in continuity with the Bachelor of Engineering in Geomatics and Public Works.

Contents

Programme StructureThe full-time programme comprises six semesters and is structured in three phases:
1. Foundations:
The first two semesters are comprised of technological, methodological and legal foundations.
2. Specialisations:
From the third semester onward, students may select their specialisation from five focus areas:
- Geomatics comprises the modules geomatics I and II, geomatics immersion and 3D geomatics
- Surveying comprises the modules principles of surveying, principles of spatial reference, GPS, remote sensing and photogrammetry
- Facility Management is taught in the modules facility management I and II and building management. Its contents include building systems, technical extensions as well as strategies and methods in real estate management.
- Land Management includes the modules development and environmental planning, land management and real estate evaluation and covers essential areas in spatial planning
- Technical Infrastructure is taught in the modules technical infrastructure water and technical infrastructure energy, as well as in the modules transport.
Immersion:
Elective modules, a project component and the Bachelor project give students the opportunity for immersion into their selected area of specialisation. In addition to the focus areas listed above, the general studies module offers a further opportunity to engage in an interdisciplinary and cross-departmental project. The programme is predominantly praxis oriented. Throughout the programme, and even before the project phase, students work together with municipalities, associations, administrations and companies. Small study groups and personal support from professors and advisors are essential to this programme. State of the art e-learning platforms further support students in the learning process.
The programme is conducted in German and comprises 180 ECTS credits. Most modules take one semester to complete, which enables students to easily study some modules at a different university or institution of higher education nationally or abroad.
Admission to this programme is not restricted. Students can enrol until October, prior to term start. A completed apprenticeship is not required for admission to the programme, however it is highly recommended.
