The goal of the degree programme is to educate healthcare professionals, who have got both general and specific knowledge of health care and nursing. The studies enable graduates to work in Finland and abroad in hospitals and health centres as well as in the private sector.

The extent of the degree programme is 210 ETCS credit units and the duration is 3.5 years. The instruction is in English.

The aim of the programme is to provide the students with a broad core knowledge base as well as the advanced knowledge necessary to fulfill current and future needs in health care. The students receive an in-depth introduction to nursing science and nursing research, so as to be able to contribute to the development of nursing. In the learning process the student formulates links between practical experience and theoretical concepts. These links require the integration of theory and practice and that is facilitated by, for example, reflection on practice. Students are offered ample opportunity to promote their personal growth and development also in international environments.

Each year includes a period of clinical practice in a specific area and the total portion devoted to practice is 75 credits. The clinical practice can be done in Finland and abroad. Methods used by the students and teachers are lectures, seminars, workshops, laboratory work, classroom practice, projects, independent work/assignments and clinical practice. The team-teaching method is also used by the teachers in order to integrate the subjects of the modules into a relevant whole.

Please, send your attachments by post in good time because the speed of postal services varies a lot in different countries. The postmark on your attachment package is not taken into account: It will NOT be sufficient. Scanned or faxed copies of the attachments will NOT be accepted. It is your responsibility to make sure that all attachments arrive at the Admission Office by the closing date. All attachments arriving after the closing date will not be considered.

1) Copies of certificates

Applicants with a Finnish qualification

If you are a candidate for the Finnish matriculation examination, you apply with your latest upper secondary school certificate, you do not need to send copies of your certificates as the UAS will receive the results of your matriculation examination directly from the Matriculation Examination Board.

If you apply with a Finnish competence-based further vocational or specialist vocational qualification, you must submit copy of your original certificate to the Admissions Office of the UAS of your first choice by 24 February 2012 4.15 pm at the latest.

If you are completing an IB-examination in a Finnish upper secondary school in the spring 2012, you must submit a copy of your Predicted Grades to the Admissions Office of the UAS of your first choice by 18 May 2012 Finnish time (+2 hrs GMT).

If you are completing a Reifeprüfung-examination in the spring 2012, you must submit a copy of your final certificate to the Admissions Office of the UAS of your first choice by 18 May 2012 Finnish time (+2 hrs GMT).

If you are completing an EB-examination in the spring 2012, you must submit a copy of your temporary certificate to the Admissions Office of the UAS of your first choice by 18 May 2012 Finnish time (+2 hrs GMT).

Applicants with a non-Finnish qualification

If you apply with a non-Finnish qualification, you must submit copies of your original certificates to demonstrate your eligibility to UAS studies. This does not apply to you if you are a citizen of an EU/EEA-country and you are completing your qualification in the spring of applying.

The copies must arrive at the Admissions Office of the UAS of your first choice by 24 February 2012 at 4.15 pm Finnish time (+2 hrs GMT). The UAS accepts only final certificates awarded by national and regional bodies granting educational certificates. Therefore other documents such as "Testimonials", "Statements of Results", "Examination Results" or "Result Slips" are not considered as official certificates.

If you are a refugee or in a refugee-like situation and you cannot prove the qualifications you have obtained through documentary evidence, the UAS can consider, whether you can be invited to the entrance examination. You must prove your refugee status by decision made by a competent authority and send a copy of the decision to the Admissions Office of the UAS of your first choice by 24 February 2012 at 4.15 pm Finnish time (+2 hrs GMT).

2) Translations of certificates

If your certificate is not written in Finnish, English or Swedish, you must also enclose certified translation of your certificate into Finnish, English or Swedish translated by a licensed translator. The translations must have translator’s signature and stamp on them.

The translations of the certificates must arrive at the Admissions Office of the UAS of your first choice by 24 February 2012 at 4.15 pm Finnish time (+2 hrs GMT).

3) Certificate of language skills

If you are applying with a non-Finnish qualification and you are not a citizen of an EU/EEA-country, you must provide proof of your English language skills to demonstrate your eligibility to UAS studies by sending a certificate of your language skills to the Admissions Office of the UAS of your first choice by 24 February 2012 at 4.15 pm Finnish time (+2 hrs GMT). You must provide one of the following minimum requirements:

* an IELTS score academic level 6.0. Order your IELTS Test Report (Getting my results). The test result is valid for two years.
* a TOEFL score 550 paper-based test / 79 - 80 internet-based test. TOEFL score results are only accepted directly from the Educational Testing Service (= ETS). When you take the test, you will have to designate the institutions you would like to receive your score reports. The Designated Institution (= DI) code for the Kemi-Tornio University of Applied Sciences is 0528. After taking the test you can order additional official score reports for institutions you did not identify in the test. The test result is valid for two years.
* skills level 4 in English in the National Certificate of Language Profiency by the Finnish National Board of Education. The certificate is valid permanently.
* an upper secondary school education in English or a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree completed in English and completed in Great Britain, Ireland, the United States, Canada, Australia or New Zealand. The language of education can be seen in your certificate.
* a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree conducted in English in an EU/EEA-country
