Gaming is a part of our world and it is getting bigger and bigger. Games like World of Warcraft, Starcraft or Call of Duty are more realistic than ever. They take you away into a virtual, interactive and imaginary world where fiction and reality meet.
As for serious gaming, this market is also developing rapidly; educative games, mobile games and games for advertising, museums or the health sector play an increasing role in our society.
Gaming is booming and big business. It is expanding like never before. The call for skilled and expert game designers is therefore a fact. With Gaming you step into a world that has no boundaries. You can visualise your own creative thoughts!
Our Gaming study programmes connect technology, creativity, innovation and human science so you will be ready to become the game specialist of the future.
Are you a technology lover? Then choose this programme!
You are the professional in the technology and programming behind the game. You do this by working close together with the game creator & producer.
First and second year
In the first two years you will create a broad base for the rest of your education. An extensive package of basic disciplines. In the first year you focus on programming Actionscript 3, including the basics of Flash graphics. You learn about structuring your code using object orientation. After flash, you continue programming within unity 3D. Vector math and game physics are included here.
In the second year we dig in deeper, using C++ as a programming language. We find out how game engines work and do some game engine programming ourselves: we also look at game servers including network programming and databases. We will be using software engineering methods like scrum, and expand the complexity of the GCP & GTP projects.
The second year ends with a major, full-time project for an external company. We do this in the first two years, this being the base for your graduation plan which you write yourself to determine in what domain you want to specialize yourself. It helps you determine where you want to do your internship, and where your focus for the next two years, and your graduation will be. Specialization, research, personal skills and professional development are the major topics here.
Third and fourth year
In the third year you´ll do an internship for approximately 5 months. In a company you are a co-worker while studying the ways the company works, their methods, their workflows and their profession. You will also improve your personal skills.
After that you can focus yourself while working on the topic of your choice for five months, also known as your specialization. Within certain restrictions, we´re there to help you choose in which domain you want to specialize, and together with your graduation coach you´ll make sure to enter the industry with the required portfolio, showing you are the right person for the job!
The minor enables you to widen your vision by choosing from the many minors Saxion offers or even from another university. You may want to do Entrepreneurship as a preparation for running your own Independent Game Company or whatever suits you to create the best game out there! Now you are ready for your graduation project. This is where you show what you can do, within the context of a company assignment.
In the end you will be able to enter the gaming industry with the required knowledge you need to be a part of that team who will create the latest games out there, whether in the entertainment industry, the educational or the serious gaming industry.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
More informationFirst of all you have to meet the general entry requirements.
For all Saxion pathways the following general entry requirements are necessary:
The students’ qualifications will be assessed by the Admission Officer of the specific Course on the basis of provided Diplomas, Curriculum Vitae, a letter of motivation and if necessary an Intake Interview.
For Both Bachelor and Master Courses the entry requirement is an Academic IELTS of 6.0 or an equivalent in another language test (TOEFL 550, etc.).
Besides that, the following applies to all students wanting to enrol in Art & Technology.
If possible, you take part in the regular application process. If this is not possible, you need to submit a CV, testimonials, a letter of motivation and an interactive portfolio (website, weblog, Flickr album or something similar) to prove your previously acquired technical skills and the ability to design. By means of an assessment (by telephone or via Skype) it will be established if your communicative skills are sufficient for admission to the course.
