What?
International Economics and Business (IE&B) is the new three year English-taught specialization of the Bachelor degree Economics and Business Economics. In IE&B you will become knowledgeable about economic issues and you will learn how to analyze, explain, and solve these issues. Within this context, you will make use of (international) economic theories. International organizations' policies will be studied and the activities carried out by multinationals will be analyzed.
Who and why?
IE&B is an internationally-oriented and English-taught programme for students who wish to acquire a broad foundation while studying for a Bachelor degree. That is why IE&B offers a curriculum that integrates several fields of interest. While the emphasis is on (international) economics, a great deal of attention is also paid to business economics (especially finance & accounting) and to a lesser extent to business administration. IE&B provides a blend of disciplines, from which you can select your Master specialization in the future.
IE&B prepares you for an international career. To gain international experience, you will venture further to study at a partner university outside the Netherlands for six months during the third year of your study.
Studying abroad
During the first semester of the third year, you will study at a foreign partner university outside the Netherlands. This period is perfect for finding a specialization because then you will have the opportunity to delve into a topic of your choice. If you know which Master you would like to enrol in prior to this semester, the courses at the foreign partner university can be selected so that you can optimally prepare yourself for your Master specialization.

In IE&B you will become knowledgeable about economic issues and you will learn how to analyze, explain, and solve these issues. Within this context, you will make use of (international) economic theories. International organizations' policies will be studied and the activities carried out by multinationals will be analyzed.
This consists of an introduction in organization theory, with due attention being paid to its origins, its main themes, and its further theoretical development. a
This course introduces you to the tools scientists use when conducting research (methods of research). During the course, possible solutions for organizational problems (methods of intervention) are also recommended.
This is a practical course given to groups of fifteen students at a time. You will acquire the skills you need to complete your academic studies successfully. For instance, you will be taught to reason and argue scientifically. You will collect and structure scientific information which you then present orally or in writing.
This course links basic elements from descriptive and explanatory statistics to economic research. It prepares you for doing the research projects later during the programme and for the other Finance, Accounting and International Economics courses.
An introduction to the tools needed for analyzing economic models and theoretical issues is provided during this course. You will practise mathematical techniques that are linked to economic research questions. The course prepares you for the Micro and Macro Economics and International Economics courses.
An overview of the core terminology and basic principles of economics is given during this course. You will come to view economics as a societal science that is closely related to issues pertaining to the field of economic politics and policies.
This course deals with the behaviour of economic agents. You will learn to analyze consumption and production decisions and subsequently ascertain how these relate to inflation, unemployment, economic growth, and the role of the government at a macro-economic level.
This project will help you to become familiar with financial organizations, capital markets and the important role money plays in the world economy. Among other others, the basic principles of the monetary theory, the monetary strategy of central banks, risk management, and the recent credit crunch will be discussed. Small groups of students will set up a research project on the theme.
This course will teach you to view the ethical aspects of organizations from a philosophical perspective. You will gain insight into the role ethics plays in the decision-making process of international organizations and you will learn how to apply the main ethical theories to moral dilemmas found in the business world.
The focus of this course is on the financial and administrative aspects of organizations, in particular those for-profit enterprises. Among others, subjects such as management accounting and control, accounting information systems and financial reporting are dealt with.
This course deals with the basic insights into international economics. You will come to understand international trade, capital flows, exchange rate fluctuations, and trade policies.
You will broaden and deepen your insights into international economics during this course.
This course consists of two parts, a micro-economics and a macro-economics component. It is the sequel to the course called Introductory Micro and Macro Economics.
This course deals with meso-economics as a business economic supplement to the course Intermediate Micro and Macro Economics. The focus is on managing international companies.
During this course you will develop skills and acquire knowledge concerning investments, risk management and project financing.
Psychological aspects play an important role in the decisions made concerning investments. This course shows insight into the behaviour of market participants and their influence on pricing in financial markets.
This course will provide you with insight into the theory and practice of financial reporting. Subjects that are included in this course are assessment and presentation of capital, result, cash flows and consolidation.
This course starts by conducting economic research analyses. The key tool is making an analysis of time series data.
Here you learn about the economic research methods from a philosophical and historic perspective. Subjects that are reviewed during this course include the developments of scientific research methods since the Renaissance, the use of experiments in the science of economics, and the economists' views on measurements.
The two subjects mentioned above are given a ‘real world' context during this project. You will be taught about the use of financial instruments such as forwards, futures, swaps and options, after which you will analyze how an organization can best use these instruments.
After having studied at a university abroad, you will continue your studies in Nijmegen. The second semester starts with the course International Investments, which deals with how to set up an international investment portfolio. The advantages and disadvantages internationalizing capital markets are also dealt with in this course.
This course prepares you for writing your Bachelor thesis and links the Bachelor and Master programmes. The major focus during the course is to teach you how to assume a critical stance during academic debates concerning current international economic issues.
Marketing will focus on the delivery of customer value through relationships with loyal customers. The marketing mix (product, price, promotion and place) provides a comprehensive view of the marketing offer to the customer.
The Bachelor specialization is concluded by writing a Bachelor thesis, in which you independently and creatively apply the knowledge, insights, and skills you have acquired to a relevant scientific research topic of your choice. A lecturer will supervise you and the final result will be presented and defended in front of your fellow students.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

International educational qualifications
If you have completed, or are about to complete a study abroad then your application for admission to the English-taught specialization International Economics and Business of the Bachelor-degree programme Economics and Business Economics will be assessed on an individual basis.
The admission procedure consists of evaluating your academic credentials, in most cases your pre-university secondary school diploma(s) and grade list, and your level of Mathematics and English proficiency. If, at the moment of application you have not yet received your pre-university diploma, or you still need to pass an entrance exam in Mathematics and/or English, then we will provide you with a letter of conditional admission stating the exact conditions for admission.
After receiving your application form and the necessary documents, as well as the receipt of your handling fee if applicable, one of the student counselors will check to see whether the application is complete and he or she will evaluate your secondary education. If available you may want to include an evaluation of your diploma(s) or degree(s) from Nuffic (a Nuffic Certificate is required for students from China).
The student counselor will submit your application to the Examination Board of the Bachelor-degree programme Economics and Business Economics, and recommend that your application either be accepted or denied. The Board will assess your application and will make a recommendation to the University Board. The University Board will inform you of their final decision within 3 months of receiving your application.

Students who wish to participate in the English-taught specialization International Economics and Business of the Bachelor degree programme Economics and Business Economics, must have sufficient proficiency in English. This requirement has been fulfilled when a student meets one of the following conditions:

Letter of motivation
All students who wish to be admitted to the English-taught specialization International Economics and Business of the Bachelor-degree programme Economics and Business Economics, must submit a letter of motivation in English (max 2 pages). In this letter of motivation students should specifically explain why they want to attend this Bachelor's programme and why they think they are suited for this programme.
Number of places is restricted
In view of the six-month semester spent abroad during the third year of the programme, we must make agreements with our partner universities. Therefore the number of places of this specialization will be restricted. Admission will take place on the basis of a student's secondary education and his or her letter of motivation. Also the composition of the whole group of students in this Bachelor-specialization may be taken into consideration.
The preliminary admission decision will be based on the points mentioned above and on the information provided in the application form. If the information that has been submitted is incomplete, the application will not be proces.
