Location of South London College

A Dental Nurse is a dental care professional who supports other oral health members across the full range of dental treatment. The Qualification is aimed at training dental nurses working in a variety of general dental practice settings, dental hospitals and the community dental practice. The student dental nurse's role ranges from reception duties and practice management to maintaining materials and equipment, cross infection control, support for the patient and the dentist during clinical procedures and oral health education.

This qualification has been designed with the support of the City and Guilds to meet the needs of dental nurse's in training.

  • Contribute to the production of dental images (OH4)
  • Provide chairside support during the prevention and control of periodontal disease and caries and the restoration of cavities (OH5)
  • Provide chairside support during the provision of fixed and removable prostheses (OH6)
  • Provide chairside support during non-surgical endodontic treatment (OH7)
  • Provide chairside support during the extraction of teeth and minor oral surgery (OH8)
  • Principles of infection control in the dental environment
  • Assessment of oral health and treatment planning
  • Dental radiography
  • Scientific principles in the management of oral health diseases and dental procedures
  • Principles and theory of Dental Nursing (Written external exam)

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

Requirements

To join this course, you must possess a good level of numeracy and written and spoken English.

Students must complete a full course of immunisation against the Hepatitis B virus and must have all childhood vaccinations completed before the start of their clinical work placement.
