BA (Hons) Fashion Management & Marketing at UCA Epsom is designed to meet the needs of this highly competitive, vibrant and constantly evolving fashion sector, aiming to produce highly employable graduates including skilled managers and executives educated with a specific understanding of the fashion industry.

Key study topics include:

* Explore the structure and workings of the fashion industry including brand management and marketing with an international perspective.

* Exploration of the global fashion outlook, ethical fashion, new markets, fashion forecasting, trend prediction and visual merchandising

* Work placement opportunity

* Final project of independent work related to a selected topic of specialisation in accordance with chosen industry sector.


Contents

Syllabus (11/12*)

Year 1

Year one is developmental, encouraging investigation and introducing you to key research and presentation skills. You become familiar with major areas of marketing theory, to enable you to understand how the industry works, and you will start to identify areas of personal interest and development, and your career direction.

* The fashion industry - enables you to investigate the concept and meaning of "Fashion", by familiarising you with the industry, its structure and the factors which shape and change it.
* Fashion management and business communication -introduces the underpinning management and business communication skills you need.
* Fashion practice and analysis - covers fashion buying and the key stages in the product sourcing and development process from concept to consumer.
* Branding and retail management - introduces the principles of branding strategies.
* Fashion marketing and consumer insight - gives you the opportunity to further explore brand management and its relationship to delivering the brand promise to the customer.
* Additionally contextual studies units underpin your studies.

Year 2

Year two requires a more intense and specialised approach to develop skills and knowledge acquired during year one. You learn about how new global markets develop, and how the relationships between the Fashion Manager and Marketer are crucial in taking advantage of opportunities.

* Global fashion - asks you to explore these new fashion markets and consider how they present new challenges and opportunities for the future.
* Fashion forecasting and trend prediction - emphasise how you can acquire the knowledge and skills of market research, trend prediction and fashion forecasting.
* Reflecting on practice - introduces the legal framework in which you work and armed with experience of all the facets of good fashion management and marketing ask you to begin to reflect and assess your skills to commence career planning.
* Experiential retailing - this unit introduces the role of visual merchandising for fashion, from creative concept development to resolution and client presentation.
* Work placement - supported by tutorials and the industry lecture. At the end of the placement you produce a critical analysis and recommendations for your placement company based on the experience.
* Contextual studies - offer a choice of two units from a menu of six to continue to provide the broader context of understanding you will need to work effectively in the fashion industry.

Year 3

In year three, you work independently with tutorial and critical support. You have the opportunity in all units to apply relevant marketing theory to inform your analysis of and analyse practice within the industry to help you and put together a strategic proposal for an independently driven, industry related final major project. Career planning is a significant feature of this stage.

* Market research & analysis - expand on and consolidate the knowledge gained from your professional links and work placement
* Dissertation - substantial period of self-directed research on a subject that is related to the historical, theoretical or critical concerns of your discipline or professional area.
* Major project - significant opportunity to confirm and demonstrate your abilities in the form of a professional pitch to an external audience.
* Career planning - opportunity to develop your interview techniques, conduct career research and develop a career development plan or research proposal as appropriate.

IELTS

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

Entry requirements (2012 entry)

The following qualifications and minimum requirements will be considered:

* Minimum entry criteria of 220-240 UCAS tariff points, see list of accepted qualifications for further details
* OR pass at UAL Foundation Diploma in Art & Design (Level 3)
* OR pass at BTEC Extended Diploma / National Diploma (Level 3)
* OR Access Diploma

AND

* Four GCSE passes at grade C or above, including English or Key Skills Communication Level 2.

Other relevant and equivalent UK and international qualifications are considered on an individual basis.

English language requirements

If your first language is not English a certificate is required as evidence that you have an average IELTS score of 6.0 (with a minimum of 5.5 in each individual component) or equivalent.

You may be offered a place on a course on the condition that you improve your English language and study skills. We offer two pre-sessional English language courses which can improve your IELTS score by a maximum of 1.0 and 0.5, or equivalent.

Portfolio/Interview

You must show a keen interest and passion for fashion. In your portfolio include projects from business studies, psychology, sociology, fashion, textiles, graphic design or another subject that you feel demonstrates your ability to research, evaluate and produce creative solutions. After applying you are sent a brief via the applicant portal that outlines a presentation that you are asked to complete and bring with you to interview.
