Location of University for the Creative Arts

The design studio or 'atelier' is a fixture of companies as diverse as Calvin Klein and Chanel. The need for practitioners within this area of craft, where time, application and tradition are matched by creativity, modernity and experimentation is vital to the industry.

Key study topics include:

* Introduction to design principles and communication
* Creative pattern cutting and three-dimensional design
* Computer aided manufacture (CAM)
* Introduction to market analysis
* Fashion theory
* Bespoke tailoring and dressmaking methods
* Advanced pattern cutting
* Design communication through illustration and computer aided design (CAD)
* Industry work placement
* Dissertation or abbreviated dissertation with research based work placement
* Development of fashion collection and catwalk show
* Portfolio development.

Syllabus (11/12*)

Year 1

The first year of the course is experimental in encouraging investigation, analysis and research. The culture of enquiry and curiosity is introduced to underpin creativity throughout the course. Work at this level enables you to gain an appreciation of a broad range of basics, which form a firm foundation to build upon.

* A question of angles & curves - introduction to the concept of transferring a flat geometric shape into a 3-dimensional woven fabric garment.
* Form & silhouette - exploring manipulation of the silhouette and the 3D form of a garment.
* Fashion histories - introduction to the key histories and cultural theories of the development of the fashion industry.
* Sleeves & collars - designing and pattern cutting creative sleeves and collar shapes.
* The dress - discovering the methods employed to create the silhouette and functionality of the basic 'cocktail' dress.
* Fashion theories - understanding the role fashion plays in formatting different identities.

Year 2

This is the experimental and developmental year which encourages you to investigate further theories and methodologies taught during the year whilst adding new skills and attitudes throughout the year.

* The tailoring atelier - exploring tailored garments and the construction of the pattern and assembly of the garment.
* Modernism and postmodernism - investigating the theories in related diverse fields such as sociology, psychology, media/film studies and art and design history.
* The 'flou' atelier - flou atelier focuses on "soft sewing" The 'flou' is about fabric handle in the relationship to the garment construction. The cut, the drape, the hang, the finishing methods and the type of garment are tightly interdependent of all these vital techniques.
* Independent work placement
* Research methodologies - lectures continue the themes from the previous semester, but now the focus moves onto how these can be used to explore the representation of fashion.

Year 3

At this final stage of the course you consolidate your acquired knowledge and understanding. The final stage enables you to prepare for professional practice in your chosen career pathway and express your personal signature style.

* Professional practice - research into atelier processes.
* Dissertation
* Atelier practice - you concentrate on the experimentation of creating the first prototypes for you atelier signature collection.
* Atelier signature - creating an atelier collection for public display.
* Professional portfolio - prepare your final exit portfolio which you take with you as you launch your professional careers.

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.

Entry requirements (2012 entry)

The following qualifications and minimum requirements will be considered:

* Minimum entry criteria of 220-240 UCAS tariff points, see list of accepted qualifications for further details
* OR pass at UAL Foundation Diploma in Art & Design (Level 3)
* OR pass at BTEC Extended Diploma / National Diploma (Level 3)
* OR Access Diploma

AND

* Four GCSE passes at grade C or above, including English or Key Skills Communication Level 2.

Other relevant and equivalent UK and international qualifications are considered on an individual basis.

English language requirements

If your first language is not English a certificate is required as evidence that you have an average IELTS score of 6.0 (with a minimum of 5.5 in each individual component) or equivalent.

You may be offered a place on a course on the condition that you improve your English language and study skills. We offer two pre-sessional English language courses which can improve your IELTS score by a maximum of 1.0 and 0.5, or equivalent.

Portfolio/Interview

You should show evidence of research; an interest and knowledge of garment construction; drawing ability; and design development of fashion.
