Køge is situated on the eastcoast of Zealand on Køge Bay by the sound (Øresund).
The town is very old - it was first mentioned in the 11th century and became a market centre and base for herring fishing in the late 13th century.
In 1677 Admiral Niels Juel won a great naval victory over Sweden in the "The Battle on Køge Bay".
The many medieval remains include St. Nicholas Church from 1324 from the tower of which captured pirates were hanged in the 14th century. Also very old is the town hall from 1570 and many old timbered houses - the oldest from as far back as 1527.
Køge is a very "hyggelig" (cozy) town with ca. 57.000 inhabitants. The town offers lots of small shops rather than one big shopping arcade, an old square in the town centre which is used for markets selling meat, fish, flowers, fruit, vegetables, clothes, pottery, jewelry etc. The market is held every Saturday and Wednesday.
As for entertainment Køge has a couple of museums and a cinema. For a broader variety of entertainment options Copenhagen - the capital of Denmark - is only ca. a 40 minute trainride away.
