Institution Info

Founded in 1456, the University of Greifswald is one of the oldest academic institutions in Europe. A symbiosis of tradition and modernity attracts 12,000 students from all over the world to come here to study. Our five faculties are constantly adapting their programmes and courses to meet the challenges of the future and to contribute to society as a whole. Research priorities in Greifswald are the life sciences, physics and geosciences, cultural interaction in the Baltic/Nordic region, and law and economics. Research and teaching aim at true excellence. The latest achievements in genome research, population-oriented medical research, and fundamental research in physics have received international attention. Scientists engage in inter-disciplinary cooperation across all faculties, e.g. to develop new pharmaceuticals, or to establish a more individualised approach to medicine.

In the Information Suite it is possible to look up general and subject-specific materials and the latest study and exam timetables and course programmes for other universities, as well as a good deal of information on the State's further-education options (foundational, additional and supplementary courses). Student Life

An excellent place to study and research Exam preparation at the beach, sailing after the lab? This is part of everyday life in Greifswald. Ultimately, students study and conduct research at a place others spend their holidays. Being Germany's sunniest region, the region around Greifswald invites you to sail and bathe. But those who are not as keen on swimming will no doubt find the right leisure time activity from the extensive choice of university sport and the town's numerous sport clubs. The University's and the town's cultural programmes are impressive.

The 'Theater Vorpommern' offers a diverse programme. The 'Nordic Sound' festival with music and culture from Northern Europe, the Bach Week or the Jazz-Festival in the ruins of a former monastery in Eldena have been an integral part of the town's cultural life for decades. Music lovers can participate in the choir, the university's symphony orchestra and the Big Band... or can dance the night away in the various students' clubs.
