Institution Info

For more than a century our University has been the centre of higher education in agricultural and forestry sciences in the central European region of Bohemia. In harmony with global trends, the Faculty of Agrobiology, Food and Natural Resources, our Institute of Tropics and Subtropics (the only educational and research institute of such kind in the Czech Republic), as well as our two new Faculties of Environmental Sciences & Forestry and Wood Sciences respectively, are putting more and more emphasis on educating students in the crucial areas of safety in the food chain and protection of the biosphere, including sustainable land and water management. Our Faculty of Engineering also educates graduates in ecologically sound waste management, environmentally friendly road vehicle management and alternative energy production (i.e. solar cell technology). Finally, the Faculty of Economics and Management, by far the largest Faculty of the university, offers its graduates more courses focusing on the rural sectors of economy and on modern, up-to-date management of private and corporate as well as state enterprises. Our university educates future leaders who will be mindful of our planet´s natural resources, as well as related socio-economic and environmental issues.

Services & Facilities

The SIC supports teaching and research work of the university and assists students in their studies. In 2002 a new building was completed, housing the main library and its technical facilities, several study rooms and lecture rooms, a hall of congress, which is also used as a lecture hall. There are ample study facilities with computer equipment, providing access to bibliographic databases and to the Internet. The Main Library, now completely computerised, offers more than 100,000 volumes of technical literature and textbooks, which are available in two study rooms or can be borrowed for home study. There is a cumulative catalogue of new acquisitions since 1990 available on line. The SIC has almost 400 titles of scientific journals and periodicals, most of which are available in the reading room. There is also a modern copy centre at your service in the library. The Department of Secondary Information offers the latest information from several specialised databases on CD-ROM and from two lines of Current Contents in digital form. It manages and develops the routine computer operations of SIC. It also checks and introduces new information technologies. The Audiovisual Centre produces its own educational programmes and edits and dubs programmes recorded from TV and other sources. It also provides photographic services for the whole university. The Computer Centre provides IT services and offers information on recent developments. In co-operation with the OIKT (Department of Information Technologies) SIC manages the university's computer and communication facilities. It provides central computer services, connects them with national and global computer networks and also presents the CULS in these networks. The centre co-operates with the OIKT in designing, developing and introducing the CULS Information System. It also operates the system, monitors and selects suitable specialised information subsystems and adapts them to CULS conditions. It endeavours to standardize the computer technology and SW used, and purchases them for other CULS departments. It also gathers information about recent developments in the sector, and organises training sessions and consultations. The Systems Development Section manages the optical computer network of the university, the local computer network of the Rector's Office, and the computer laboratory in the JIH student dormitories, including the UNIC, CULS WEB server systems and the electronic mail service. Its tasks include protecting the university networks against illegal activities and loss of data. The Database Section controls and maintains the ORACLE data system, the MAGION subsystems, and databases on studies, salaries and stores. It also provides general advice services to users. SIC additionally supervises a two-shift operation of the computer laboratory at the JIH student dormitories for independent study. The SIC staff has an important role in the production of promotional materials and printed publications and prepares presentations of the university at exhibitions. SIC has its own projects funded by the Ministry of Education, and provides its own advisory services and consultations. All Faculty buildings as well as most of the lecture halls and classrooms have been equipped with facilities for wheelchair users. We also have 12 specially equipped rooms for disabled students. The Institute for Education and Communication has teaching aids for students with eye handicaps. CULS has modern and spacious canteen (menza) facilities which offer meals three times a day at extremely reasonable prices. Our dining hall is managed by EUREST (an international catering company, which serves many university canteens on campuses throughout Europe. There is an offer of several kinds of meals for lunch (including a vegetarian dish), a salad bar and a choice of desserts, soft drinks and hot drinks. The canteen is closed on weekends and during holidays. If you want to dine in town, or in the vicinity of the campus, you may consult our restaurant listing.
