About

Many important questions are best addressed from the multi and interdisciplinary perspective that a PPE programme provides. Examples include questions about the relation between globalization and social justice, the economic and political feasibility of implementing environmental policies, the causes of economic downturns, and the responsibilities of professionals. Such questions are simultaneously global and local in scope, they concern policies that while internationally important also impact local communities. In a PPE programme three disciplines are combined to address such questions (which are put central in our Philosophy Courses in Philosophy help students identify the historical background of societal issues, provide an ethical education that lets them think carefully about the kinds of solutions that would be desirable, and give a training in epistemology, logic and decision theory, which allows learners to consider the epistemic and logical presuppositions of different approaches to societal issues.Economics Economics courses give students an understanding of the relationship between societal phenomena and economic processes and of the driving forces behind these relationships. They provide a fundamental element of realism by outlining how various solutions must take into account scarcity constraints. While the ethical education trains students to consider what solutions are desirable, an education in economics focuses their attention on which solutions are feasible.Political science Tomorrow’s professionals must also possess an awareness of the competing claims and interests of global and local stakeholders. Political Science offers essential knowledge of the institutional structures that order society and, given those structures, of the nature and content of political decision making. Courses in this domain provide students with an in-depth understanding of concepts such as power, policy, democracy, conflict and cooperation.

Accreditation

The PPE programme of the John Stuart Mill College has been awarded the “Distinctive feature of small-scale and intensive education” by the the Dutch-Flemish Accreditation Council (NVAO). Programmes can qualify for this distinctive status provided that they meet the following requirements:

  • The teaching in small-scale and intensive programmes is considerably more intensive than that in standard programmes. Education is intertwined with extra-curricular activities so that an academic and/or professional community is created in which students and staff participate.
  • The curriculum is inseparably connected to the social context, which facilitates the achievement of the attainment targets. A recognisable educational environment including all related facilities is essential.
  • The small scale of such programmes is an important condition for the creation and development of a high-level academic and/or professional community.
  • These programmes are intended for highly motivated and talented students. There is a stringent admission procedure aimed at realising the optimal match between student and programme. In this respect, the focus is on academic and/or professional capacity and motivation.

(drawn up in accordance with principles set out for distinctive features in Ch. 7 of the Assessment Framework of the Higher Education Accreditation System)

The special status is subject to review as part of the regular accreditation cycle (every 6 years). The learning outcomes realised by the students, the high level of the education provided and the success rates achieved should demonstrate that these programmes offer students an optimal education.

Programme Structure

Year One: Foundations

The Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE) programme is a three-year degree. At VU Amsterdam the academic year is divided into two semesters. The first year of the PPE programme begins with an introduction to PPE, which covers the topics, methods, and primary theories of PPE. In the remaining two periods of the first semester you will take introductory courses in each of the foundational disciplines (philosophy, political science and economics) as well as a course on PPE-methods. The second semester will provide you additional foundational courses and a second methods course: statistics. In the last part of the first year will take your first interdisciplinary PPE in Practice-course, which integrates both the theory and methods you have acquired so far.

Year Two: Theory

At the beginning of the second year you choose two of the three PPE disciplines (excellent students can also complete an additional 24 EC and continue with all three tracks). You will take two courses in each of your chosen tracks, will choose four electives in the two tracks and follow two integrative PPE in Practice-courses.

Year Three: Practice

In the third year of your study Philosophy, Politics and Economics, the emphasis will shift to preparing you for future academic study and for careers beyond the academy. During the fifth semester of your studies you may choose to either pursue your studies at one of our partner institutions, or to undertake an internship. During the final semester you will complete two large-scale projects: the PPE thesis and the final PPE in Practice course. You will work in groups to produce professional quality policy briefs. These briefs will be honed through input with your peers in the programme’s ‘Policy Lab’. During this semester you will incorporate your previous experiences studying abroad and in your internship along with the skills you have acquired throughout the programme to produce professional quality research and policy projects.
